Oklahoma Family Sues Church Over Death in Ring

The family of a former University of Tulsa football player who died following an unsanctioned boxing match at a local church filed a suit Friday in Tulsa County against the church for damages.

The suit alleges gross negligence by Guts Church for promoting and organizing a boxing match that was not licensed and in violation of state and federal regulations.

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

What a contrast to the lovely article Awake September 22nd 1980 - "Our Pursuit of Fame in the Boxing Ring" - about the professional boxer who was going for the European championship when he decided to quit when his Bible studying caused his conscience to kick in with such principles as Romans13:10 "Love does not work evil to one's neighbour" even if knocking the other person senseless is sanitised by boxing rules. Despite the rules, he had still killed a man in the ring. Also: “He who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot be loving God, whom he has not seen.” 1 John 4:20
