Italian billionaire Pier Luigi Loro Piana stunned by loss of superyacht that fell off cargo ship

 

An Italian billionaire has likened losing his $58m superyacht to having his house burn down.

 

The 40m My Song, a record-breaking superyacht owned owned by the fashion heir Pier Luigi Loro Piana, has been lost at sea after it fell off a cargo ship in the Mediterranean.

 

It was being transported from the Spanish island of Mallorca to Genoa in Italy when it slipped overboard.

?? Why transport a boat, on a boat??

Perhaps this yacht had been prepared for the planned race..When I was growing up, my dad kept our 18' Lightning sail boat in dry dock, always scraping barnacles off the bottom after each race. This contributed to a better outcome of the next race. Also, can you imagine the rigging of such a huge yacht, as mentioned above, and that it probably was tweeked and outfitted already for the future race? Of course, not everyone can afford to transport a racing yacht by this means!

I’m wondering, shouldn’t such a boat be capable of staying afloat, unmanned for some time? And shouldn’t it have beacon? So, possibly, it’s just ghost shipping itself to North Africa.
