Italy is set to declare a state of emergency in Venice after the Italian city was engulfed by 1.87m (6ft) high water levels, flooding its historic basilica and cutting power to homes.

More than 80% of the city, a Unesco world heritage site, was under water when tides were at their highest.

Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte described the flooding as "a blow to the heart of our country".

He said the government would now act quickly to provide funds and resources.

"It hurts to see the city so damaged, its artistic heritage compromised, its commercial activities on its knees," Mr Conte, who visited the region late on Wednesday, wrote in a Facebook post (in Italian).

Venice, like New Orleans is built in a really poorly chosen location. The idea of continually throwing money at remediation cities and towns built in areas which are just destined by geography to be destroyed is a drain on their countries resources and the worlds.

And marine choosing to build a city on the edge of a cliff( because of the view )knowing full well that your going to have to continually work feats of expensive engineering wonder to prevent the city from being lost. Then when it becomes just to much upkeep begging the world to pay for your project. Beautiful but ridiculous.

Man dies in Venice's worst floods for 50 years

I imagine the foundations of these buildings could give way.  You know how many billions of euro's it would take to repair?  I doubt if Venice or Italy has that sort of money.   Not only the foundation that holds these buildings up, but all the fresco's inside and furniture that dates back 1,000 years or so.  Ruined.  Art lost to flooding.  And those giant ocean liners back and forth making waves along the Grand Canal!  The place is being over run by water. And as far as I see the weather, it will not abate for some time.

Maybe it’s time to sent in the UHaul gondolas and some luggage.

There are two problems here: the city is sinking and the sea level is rising. Four hundred years ago a tide like the one in the past weeks wouldn't have caused any problem. But the city ground level is 1 meter lower today than it was then.

Venice is built upon mud islands that were reinforced by driving millions of wood stakes into the mud. A layer of gravel was put over those stakes, and they built upon that. Surprisingly those stakes have survived for many hundreds of years in perfect condition. But when the walls fall down and the gravel is removed by the water, those stakes enter in contact with the air and rot quickly. In other words, the more buildings collapse, the quicker the rest will collapse too.

So Br. Carlos, if Venice were to have a major earthquake, wouldn't all of this go down into the water?
