The study found that worldwide, wet-bulb readings approaching or exceeding 30C on the wet bulb have doubled since 1979. The number of readings of 31— previously believed to occur only rarely—totaled around 1,000. Readings of 33—previously thought to be almost nonexistent—totaled around 80.

A heat wave that struck much of the United States last July maxed out at about 30C on the wet bulb, translating into heat indexes approaching 115 F in places; the highest was 122 F, in Baltimore, Md., and a similar wave hit in August. The waves paralyzed communities and led to at least a half-dozen deaths, including those of an air-conditioning technician in Phoenix, Az., and former National Football League lineman Mitch Petrus, who died in Arkansas while working outside.

It was a modest toll; heat-related illnesses already kill more U.S. residents than any other weather-related hazard including cold, hurricanes or floods. An investigation last year by the website InsideClimate News revealed that cases of heat stroke or heat exhaustion among U.S. troops on domestic bases grew 60 percent from 2008 to 2018. Seventeen soldiers died, almost all in the muggy U.S. Southeast. High-humidity heat waves in Russia and Europe, where far fewer people have air conditioning, have killed tens of thousands.

While the heatwave is ongoing, India has recently been ravaged by Typhoon Amphan that has killed at least 100 people.

A water shortage affecting 1.3 billion people, last year some cities ran out of water.

Some cities are experiencing floods, more rainfall coming in the next couple of days.

Huge swarms of locusts are destroying crops in western and central India, may enter New Delhi.

All this while the coronavirus is ongoing, India is 10th for worlds worst for the corona virus.

Mercury rose to 36.6C degrees (98F), making the city the hottest in the country

It was also the second highest temperature on record overall behind 37.6C (100F) set in August 1975. The previous record for May of 34.7C (94.5F) was set in 2010.

 

Ontario was hit with a record 35C (95F) but with the humidity Environment Canada said it felt like 40C (104F) in both cities.

Arctic records its hottest temperature ever

 

Small town of Verkhoyansk (67.5N Latitude) which is in Siberia reached 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, and also the hottest temperature ever recorded inside the Arctic circle which begins at 66.5N Latitude.

 

To put this in perspective, Miami Florida has only ever reached 100F once since 1896.

Denver hit a record temperature on Saturday of 101, Bolder hit a record of 99 for September on Saturday.

Only just trying to understand this , is this threshold one that would mean that the earth would not sustain life due to the heat ( obviously not going to happen ) but is that the trajectory this threshold is heading to ?

So the threshold they are talking about is the 1.5C, which is what the Paris Accord agreement was set at. They agree at this temperature, it will be the maximum we can sustain life on earth comfortably, anything more it will not be ideal conditions for humans to live in.

 

It’s been said that at 1.5C about 14% of earth’s population will be exposed to severe heatwaves, and at 2.0C that number jumps to 37%. Extreme heatwaves will become widespread at 1.5C.

China reached highest temperature ever recorded for Beijing on February 21st @ +26.6C, one day earlier though it reach +20C which was also a record before Sunday’s record. Previous record was on February 13th in 1996 @ +19.8C

 

North Korea reached highest temperature ever recorded for city of Pohang @ 24.9C surpassing previous record of February in 2004 @ 24.5C.
