I'm glad someone mentioned the f words. That was a huge turn off for me and David too. Star Trek used to be a family friendly show.

The change first started with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with Kirk's use of, shall we say, colorful metaphors.

Yes, Star Trek: Picard is rated TV-MA in the United States.  The rating should make it clear there is a less family-friendly atmosphere to the show.

It's funny how certain obscenities become commonplace and easily accepted.  People were offended with "Gone with the Wind" because of the use of the word damn.  Nowadays those same people (those who are still alive) have no problem watching entertainment that uses that word.

Shawn, it's funny you should mention "Gone With the Wind".

Back in the early 1970's they showed that movie at one of our local movie theaters - it was a "special showing" of the original movie, complete with the "intermission" that was built into that long movie.

One of the Sisters in our group had never seen the movie and had never heard "that infamous line". She wasn't really sure just what the line was ... and none of us told her. The movie house was nearly filled with very few empty seats. There were about a dozen of us in our group (all JW's - most of us Regular Pioneers).

As the end of the movie got close, the theater got very quiet in anticipation of "the line". When Clark Gable stopped at the door and turned to say the line - the others in the theater broke out in thunderous cheers and applause (this is a college town) and completely drown out the sound from the movie. After the audience calmed back down, the sister said, "I still don't know what he said." This brought round of laughter from about a third of the people in the theater that heard her. Then, as if cued, most of the audience repeated the line in imitation of Gable.

She was a bit embarrassed but she had a good laugh about it when we got back in the car to leave the theater.

Now .... back to the regularly scheduled topic

I’ve found the last 2 episodes were rather boring but I never did see the Star Trek movie First Contact which apparently is about the borg - maybe that’s why I find it boring because I don’t know the back history.

Is First Contact any good?

That depends on who you ask. To a Trek fan ... yes, it's good.

It has many aspects ... humor, conflict, adventure, poignancy, intrigue and time travel ... how can that be bad?

David was sharing it on his Amazon account; I don't think the ratings are the same in the UK. I'm not sure.
There were a lot of things about the first two episodes that  put me off from the series tbh. The language was just the straw that broke the camel's back.
I've been watching reviews to see if it gets any better again, and honestly, nothing tempts me in the slightest to return to watching it. It doesn't look blatantly horrible, but, at the same time, it just doesn't look all that interesting or like it contains any of the qualities that made me love star trek tng or ds9.

That's a matter of opinion.  I'm a Star Trek fan but I rate First Contact about the middle.

I don't mean to take away from this topic in particular, but I did start a speculative fiction club where we can relax and discuss most all speculative fiction stories be it movies, TV, books, podcasts, whatever...  I started one on Picard.
