He shouldn't be holding the piece that he is cutting off. He should be holding the long piece and let the short piece drop when he cuts it. Holding the short piece like that will cause it to pinch onto the blade when he starts the cut.

So, if he's right-handed, he would either have to go to the other side of the pipe or the other end of it. I see said the blind man.
