Yorkshire Accent

Recommended Posts

My wife and I were reading about a radio show in the past in the UK called “Have A Go”. It was the first radio quiz show in the UK to offer money prizes (as well as commodities).

The host was Wilfred Pickles and his wife Mabel. He went on to carve out a long career in broadcasting.

He was originally hired by the BBC to present a North of England local radio programme. He came from Halifax in Yorkshire, and he was the first person on BBC to speak with a local accent.

During the war he was promoted to reading the news for the BBC because he did not speak “received pronunciation” English!  The thought was that the Germans would be unable to understand him!

Yorkshire can still be an unintelligible accent to many.

All Creatures Great and Small 2020 Season 1 Episode 4

Oh going to love this TV series after having enjoyed immensely the books by James Herriot. Yes indeed the accent is so lovely to hear. Hadn't quite imagined that's how Dr. Herriot would sound like. Adds another dimension to the vet's life experiences.

Recently I bought one of  his books from the thrift shop for a song. Very good condition and beautifully illustrated.

Thanks Sister Uani.

(This) is a 2020 television series based upon the books about a Yorkshire vet, written by Alf Wight under the pen name of James Herriot. The first series, which consists of six episodes and a special Christmas episode, was filmed in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first book in the James Herriot series. The series premiered in the US on PBS as part of Masterpiece Classic on 10 January 2021.

This was the one I was referring to. You can click on the link on my post above.

Ee but it‘s grand weather today. Sun‘s shinin‘ and apart from a bit of a breeze it‘s fair warm. 21.8 celsius in t‘ sun. (that‘s 71.4F for them as uses that scale.)

Me arm is painin‘ me as usual but it‘d do that if I were laid on t‘settee anyroad, so I may as well enjoy t‘ Spring weather.  Me missis is sittin‘ just by me so we can chat if we want or just shut up.

T‘ sky‘s a grand blue colour and t‘ trees are gettin‘ t‘ be greener with t‘ nice weather. T‘ Virginia creeper still i‘n‘t sproutin‘ leaves, but that‘s normal for late March.

A robin just flew past me left side t’ food we put out, then he flew back to t‘ trees passin‘ me on t‘ right!  They‘re a luvly bird and when they get t‘ know thee they‘re reet friendly.

‘Am feelin‘ a bit tired, cos I di‘n‘t get much kip last neet. An hour or so at most.

I ’ave t’ get ready for t’ zoom chat wi’ rocket and whoever else joins us at four o’clock London time an’ it’s ten past three now!

Time for a cat nap, I reckon’
