Be very careful and alert to the symptoms of Lyme disease. It can be very hard to get under control if not treated early on. I worked with some one that spent months in the hospital and nearly died from it. Always wear protective clothing in areas that might expose you to the danger.

Lyme's Disease is a terrible disease. My sister has it. It took 5 years of being sick and sick and sick before any tests showed a possibility. It takes a lot of money for medication as they have to keep adjusting and changing the medicine to work just for you. And up to last year it was not covered by any medical. And to top it all off Doctor's did not believe in the Disease; so she could get no real support. Tanya is still so ill that I wonder why she is alive some days. Throwing up from her medicine and the disease. Diahrea etc. Some days she can't even hold down water. And it affects the mind; depression is often a side affect. As well Lyme's Disease leads to other diseases as it affects all the body's organs thus complicating the medicine and effects even more. She misses so much work that it is amazing they still have her as an employee. And because she is so ill she misses meetings and service for weeks at a time. It's a very disturbing disease.

Not all carry Lyme disease but be careful and aware of what to watch for. Generally a bullseye type rash around the bite area is the first symptom. I had a bite when I was pregnant with my son (he is almost three now) and had no problems. My older son (he's 21) has had several bites (for some reason they like him I guess) every time the area will swell awful and he will go to the doctor for a round of antibiotics just in case. He seems to be highly allergic to them. The last time he got bit was in between two fingers and his whole hand swelled. Lyme disease can be treated if it is caught early.

I've never been bitten that I know of thankfully. Ironically enough I was watching Dr. Phil the other day (I don't usually bother with him), but he was talking about Lyme disease so I listened for a bit. His show indicated much the same thing as Cherie says, some doctors believe it exists (I know I certainly do) whereas others do not.

We have lots of Ticks here because of the warm damp weather... I have had a good few and always seem to find them after they have buried into my skin ! I have a thing called a Tick Twister which removes them easily.... I hate the way they can creep over your skin and you don't feel them there half the time !!

A brother in our congregation has Lyme Disease. It is real. It is very hard to diagnose and mimics so many other illnesses, especially at onset, so that once the doctor's finally figure out what you have, it's too late for the treatment. You have to live with managing the symptoms.

Good news on both fronts, first off the end of this system is going to fix that. While we wait though, technological advances in sensors will allow for faster, more accurate diagnosis and ultimately faster treatment. If I were a physician and I had someone come to me with a wide array of symptoms I'd treat as if they had Lyme to see if it alleviated the issue.

According to a biomarker database Lyme is caused by a bacterial infection with a spirochete from the species complex Borrelia burgdorferi. I'd test for that, but start them on an antibiotic course in the meantime while we looked into it further. Wouldn't harm the patient, but has loads of potential to help them.
