I don't know if this is against the rules here, but I do remember a congregation letter being read about requesting donations for helping others.  It must have been over a year ago because I can't find it and it seems only the past year of letters are available.

 

But anyways, going from memory, the letter basically said not to start fundraisers on behalf of others in the congregation.  If someone wishes to start one for themselves, they can.  And it would not be something to be announced or even mentioned in conversation at a meeting.

 

There might be more to it, but that's all I can remember.  That being said, maybe this is a grey area?  

 

Sorry to hear about the sister, and wish I could help.  But I'm currently drowning in medical debt myself...
