I wonder what it means to "cycle a person's blood within the body maintained by an IV connection"?

Would that be cell salvage?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

"During the procedure, Reid-Mensah’s blood cycled within her body maintained by an IV connection. During traditional heart transplant procedures, the patient’s blood is re-introduced into the body after running through a heart-lung bypass machine."

The traditional machine takes over the functions of your heart and lungs. It acts as a pump and bypasses the heart. Blood flows out of you and carbon dioxide is removed, oxygen is added, and it is pumped back into your body. Your heart and lungs are stopped during the procedure.

I have no idea how they did this without the machine. They had to circulate blood somehow and the lungs would have had to be kept active. Maybe someone was manually squeezing a pump? I am curious how this was done.
