House search after attack in Leibnitz (Follow-up story!)

After explosives detonated on two Jehovah's Witnesses' cars in Leibnitz in August, a suspect's house was searched this week. According to “Kurier”, the man is said to be a former member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

During a Jehovah's Witnesses service in Leibnitz on August 18th, explosive devices were secretly mounted on the underbody of two cars. These detonated and no one was injured. During the fair, visitors heard a loud bang. When the owner went to her car, she noticed parts lying around her car.

The explosives on the second car detonated as the driver was driving home. The driver remained uninjured.

The spokesman for the public prosecutor's office, Hansjörg Bacher, confirmed the house search on Thursday. Bacher did not want to say anything about the fact that the suspect is a former member of Jehovah's Witnesses and the ex-partner of the woman whose car was detonated with explosives, as the "Kurier" reports.

No one was injured in the attacks

This was front page news....

AUSTRIA: The Kronen Zeitung newspaper, 20 August 2023, front page, and pages 10 and 11

This is Austria's largest newspaper. The headlines translate as:

  • Explosive attack on Jehovah's Witnesses
  • Cowardly Explosive attack on Jehovah's Witnesses in Steiermark!

It happened on the eve of the Austrian 'Exercise Patience' Annual Convention....

AUSTRIA: The Der Standard newspaper, 21 August 2023, page 5

This is considered a 'newspaper of record'. The headline translates as:

  • Explosive devices in Leibnitz could have caused far more damage
  • Investigators suspect direct connection with the religious community of Jehovah's Witnesses - Convention on Sunday with police protection

AUSTRIA: The Der Standard newspaper, 22 August 2023, page 8

The headline translates as:

  • The search for the bomber
  • The attack, which is said to have been aimed at Jehovah's Witnesses in Leibnitz, took investigators by surprise. The group is not actually considered to be at risk. There is still no trace of the alleged perpetrator.

What marriage ban?

A possible scenario: It could be a female bible student living with a man makes a decision to end the relationship instead of marry an unbeliever..in other words 'marriage ban' may refer to 'marry only in the Lord'..

The Kurier newspaper says, in part, translated via DeepL:

Ex-partner and Ex-witness

But apparently without results. Until one man came into the investigators' sights: according to KURIER information, a former member of Jehovah's Witnesses. The suspect is said to be the ex-partner of the woman whose car detonated one of the bombs. His possible motive? Love and hate.

As it turns out, he apparently wanted to marry the woman, but did not receive permission from the religious community. It is still unclear whether this is a sufficient motive for the crime.

The question of what relationship the man whose car the second pipe bomb was attached to might have had with the suspect remains unanswered at this stage of the investigation. Results are not expected for at least two weeks.

Thanks, now it was big enough for me to read it 😉 The translation above from DeepL is correct.

But it´s the most senseless explanation I have ever heard. Raises more questions than it answers.
