Surgeon general wants tobacco-style warning applied to social media platforms

Recommended Posts

The opening of the article reads:

"U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Monday called on Congress to require a tobacco-style warning for visitors to social media platforms.

In an op-ed published in The New York Times, Murthy said the mental health crisis among young people is an urgent problem, with social media “an important contributor.”

I recently deleted my facebook page, even thought I used it in a private mode, I found it taxing to check each day. I am now considering closing my private instagram page. What are your thoughts about the Surgeon Generals warning?

I think the brothers warned us about the dangers of social media a long time before the surgeon general did..

If only the general public was all JW!

Yes. The only social media I use is JWTalk! No Facebook, no Instagram, no... anything else. And even JWTalk in itself can be taxing if one is not careful. I just don't come on the forums here if I feel it's getting to be too much; it comes on a lower scale than other more important things.

Which one of Jehovah's Witnesses needs a reminder from the surgeon general when we are guided by Bible principles?

Sadly, this may be what some of the Brothers and Sisters need to take a serious look at their Social Media. I know that does not make sense, but some of the friends (including me) are sometimes slow in following direction or suggestions sometimes!

I removed myself from social media a while ago. Best thing I ever did. It was definitely a big time waster and I really found it disturbing how much tracking goes on while you are on those sites. Recently I read an article that social media was really designed to be an addiction engine. It is an ingenious way of marketing, provide a free platform under the disguise that it keeps you in touch with family and friends--all the while tracking what you look at and then presenting all sorts of these things on each visit you make so that you spend more and more time on social media. We can't be surprised that there are dangers related to using these websites. It's Satan's world we live in and he's using everything at his disposal to get us to break our integrity to Jehovah.

I decided it was too dangerous for myself to be on them. There is a proliferation of apostates on these websites, and if you're not careful... My motto is "you won't die if you aren't on social media, but the opposite may not be true. You really don't know what path it will lead you down. I don't want to find out...😬

the fact they have age requirements on alcohol and tobacco sites but can't pass the same for pornography sites... a social media warning is pretty laughable.

Age restrictions have never stopped the access for tobacco or alcohol, maybe slowed it down slightly. The same could be said of social media and the internet. Warnings are just that, they can be used to guide people in the right direction to go.

Some people will heed warnings, others will not. You have to start somewhere.
