There is a certain expectation that events like this will happen, especially to individuals that are so polarizing. So, I don't think we are callous, we are just not surprised.

I think the callousness comes in when a lot of people in the media make jokes an poke fun at the event. No, we're not shocked, but it's also a place where a man died protecting his family. It's good for us that we're not involved in politics, but it's still sad for the people who are and end up dying because people think that shooting someone is the appropriate answer to fears that their side might be losing.
