A1C

An A1C test measures the average amount of sugar in your blood over the past few months. Healthcare providers use it to help diagnose prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes and to monitor how well your diabetes treatment plan is working.

Blood sugar target ranges

The following recommended ranges are for most people with diabetes...  Your target range may be different based on your age, health status and diabetes management plan. Always follow your doctor's recommendations specified for you.

Before meals: 80 to 130 mg/dL

After meals (1-2 hours later): Below 180 mg/dL

A1C testing‎

In addition to regular blood sugar monitoring at home, you should also test your A1C at least twice a year if you have diabetes. Find out more about A1C goals and the importance of checking it.

What does the A1C test measure?

When you check your blood sugar at home, it's a snapshot of a single point in time. But your blood sugar constantly changes, so this doesn't give you a complete picture. The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.

measuring their A1C

Go to the doctor and ask if you need to do the test. Usually it is done together with the normal blood test to check for sugar in blood and  cholesterol level in body especially if the figures are not within the target range. The doctor will decide if it is necessary to include a liver test.  It's part of the annual health check up especially since many younger people are having issues with life style related diseases.

Why it's done

The results of an A1C test can help your doctor or other health care provider:

Diagnose prediabetes. If you have prediabetes, you have a higher risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes. To confirm a diabetes diagnosis, your doctor will likely look at the results of two blood tests given on different days — either two A1C tests or the A1C test plus another test, such as a fasting or random blood sugar test.

Step 1: Identify The Vein

The first step in drawing blood correctly is to identify the appropriate veins to puncture. For adult patients, the most common and first choice is the median cubital vein. Commonly referred to as the antecubital, it can be found in the crevice of the elbow.

I used to be an easy jab for taking blood samples. Now that I am older, I am not such an easy jab, and they often have to use the vein in the back of my hand because they can't easily find or hit the one in the arm

9 Phrases To Use Instead of Asking 'How Are You?' According to Psychologists

6. Find Out Emotional Highs and Lows

For a window into their inner world, Dr. Andrew Cuthbert, PsyD, LP, and the Clinical Director of Michigan-based mental health care practice Timber Creek Counseling, suggests asking "What has been the high and low point of your day?" It shows you're interested beyond politeness and want details so they can open up.

7. Get to Feelings

As Dr. Patel a psychologist notes, "How are you holding up?" is an open invitation to explore emotions that signals "It's a great open-ended question with no pressure, but opens the door so they can share how they are feeling."'

You might have to ask @Mike047 I've not used a percentage to represent A1c figures. In this former British colony, we use mmol/l (same as UK, I suppose)

n.b. Oops Br is from UK. I think as a 3rd world country, we have not kept up with the times. Still living on coconut trees. 😄

That's really dangerous, almost going off the charts.

The side bar says 'suicidal'. You really need to watch your diet carefully. No fried foods, miniscule amount of sugar 😭, eat avocado often, extra virgin olive oil (the kind you need to put in the fridge) Lots of green vegetables.... Maybe you can give us an idea of what your diet is like.
