The World Oldest Wild Bird Lays Another Egg.

Recommended Posts

I was doing some research for another blog and found this in a 2014 Awake!: https://www.jw.org/finder?wtlocale=E&docid=102014122&par=6&srcid=share

More research and found out it is still alive, and still laying eggs.

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is still alive and continues to defy expectations. As of December 2024, at approximately 74 years old, she has returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and laid a new egg. This marks her first egg in four years.

Wisdom was first banded in 1956, and since then, she has been monitored closely by biologists. Throughout her lifetime, she has laid an estimated 50 to 60 eggs and successfully raised as many as 30 chicks. Her long-term mate, Akeakamai, has not been seen for several years, but upon her recent return, Wisdom was observed interacting with a new male partner, with whom she has laid the latest egg.

Laysan albatrosses typically have a lifespan of up to 68 years, making Wisdom’s continued vitality and reproductive activity particularly remarkable. Her resilience offers valuable insights into the longevity and breeding behaviors of seabirds.

Wisdom’s story beautifully reflects how Jehovah’s creation praises Him. Her longevity and resilience remind us of the intricate design and care evident in all living things. As Psalm 148:7-10 (NWT) invites, “Praise Jehovah from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deep waters, you wild animals and all domestic animals, you creeping things and winged birds,” Wisdom’s remarkable life demonstrates the care and wisdom of her Creator. Her story not only inspires awe but also encourages us to reflect on the sustaining power behind all life.
