Will the US penny survive?

Recommended Posts

With the cost to make a penny (1 cent) in the United States costing 3.7 cents to make some have wondered is the penny going to survive. The US penny will likely survive in 2025 because the president's order to stop minting pennies doesn't require pennies to be taken out of circulation.
Explanation:
The Coinage Act of 1965 makes pennies legal tender, so Congress would need to pass new legislation to end the penny. The treasury secretary can change the composition of the penny without minting new copper pennies. Pennies are designed to last about 25 years, so they'll continue to be used even if production stops. While the penny's production may stop, the coin will remain in circulation for many years. Some coin collectors may be interested in pennies from 2025, the year they stopped being minted. (information obtained from a Washington Post article. AI created overview of story)

Due to inflation, I will no longer accept "A penny for your thoughts" as an invitation to offer my opinion, it will now cost a nickel.

It costs almost 14 pennies to make a nickel. Will they have to make more to make up for no pennies?

I wonder what the overall cost increase or decrease to not making the penny is. I wouldn't mind getting paid a few good pennies to do that study

I live in the town that makes the blanks for every penny minted, Greeneville, Tennessee. The plant is a employer for several people, one of which is a Brother, hoping they can work it out so he won't be shut out of some type of compensation.

Greeneville, Tennessee was in the news talking about how they voted.

It has been said for a long time that it costs more to make a penny than the penny is actually worth.  It isn't a problem for me.  I use credit cards to pay for everything I buy.  I can pay them in full when I receive the statement and never have to pay interest.

I have a collection of pennies.  I'll sell them to the highest bidder.  JK.
