If you want to visit Major Geeks and the link wont work just type in www.majorgeeks.com and go to the "forums" section. What you want is in the "Malware" section.

Also, some of the malware that is out there "knows" the programs and sites that can remove it and it will try to prevent you from using those programs/sites. You may need to boot in "Safe Mode"

more good info! computer running so Quiet... and Fast now...to Vernalee, John, Chuck many thanks!!

you all seem to know alot about this... few follow-up ?s:

 1. after installing then running malwarebyte to remove viruses, do I run it each wk? or just when seems to be a problem?

 2. also installed 'advanced system care' Vernalee recommended... do I run it each wk?

then after the free trials run out, is the best 1 to purchase the "Nod32 antivirus" by Eset? and is just 1 antivirus system enough for all possible bugs?

appreciate your suggestions & advice  :D

I run SuperAntiSpyware more than one time a day - usually after a browser session since it removes tracking cookies.

I also use Spybot Search and Destroy (with Tea Timer turned off) and run that about once a week.

I run Malwarebytes about once a month

I have the free version of all these programs.

In addition to that I also have Norton - I know, it is a resource hog, but the FULL version is free with my Internet service and my computer seems to handle it just fine. It runs in the background all the time.

I do not disagree with the programs the others mentioned, however, I do not have first hand experience with any of them.

I have been using ASC for about 10 years. I also use a free program called Clean up. I have the antivirus that Musky suggested and so far I am problem free. I run the ASC once a week and the Clean up after the ASC is done scanning.

John wow that's alot of antivirus maintenance, thank you   didn't realize all this was needed

Yikes I'm wayyy behind Vernlee once/wk good idea...

just ran my ASC scan, it's summary: 31716 problems found... privacy issues, shortcut errors, junk files,

registry errors... afraid to 'repair all' :scared: as it suggests, seems like alot of data, etc gone...?  is it safe to allow it to delete so much?  no malware though since ran malwarebyt earlier

did y'all ever delete or repair this much?

Yes the first time I ran it. My computer was a mess. The privacy issues are usually cookies and stuff and you mentioned that you needed to up date some things. IE has to be updated and you could also have added toolbars that  can cause you privacy issues.

I also use a program call CCleaner from Piriform that I use to clean up the Registry and unneeded/left over files from various places (trash, temp files, etc) It works quite well. I use it about once a month.

Yes, it is normal that the first time you clean a system, especially one that is having problems, it will find a great many items and can take quite some time with the cleaning process.

and yet more cleaning!! :toothbrush:

brother John you must have the most spotless computer system ever! seriously, thanks for putting my mind at ease ~ was a lil freaked out to see SO many 'infections'... had no idea this happens,

my thinking was: I do not open weird e-mail nor go to trouble websites, and who would ever send me a bug anyway??

how would I ever get a virus if I'm careful? :shrugs:

thanks to all your help I've already scanned & removed many probs  (<img src=)'>

still unable to click on your ccleaner link above :S  perhaps this will fix soon too

--> are you all still doing accessories tasks like regular disc cleanup, defrag, etc... or do you let the downloads take care of these?

The ASC program has as part of it's scan a disc cleaner and defrag. But if you had that many problems, you probably need to defrag. The program has a defrag option built in it. Look under Toolbox in the menu.

yes I saw that, neat! and it did a defrag, wondered if it was just a 1st time thing for the trial...

certainly is worth it to purchase these downloads you all recommended... they are so thorough!

If you continue to have problems try visiting MajorGeeks and they will help you fix/clean your computer. Look down the list and open the thread that says "READ & RUN ME FIRST" and follow the directions.

The guys at Major Geeks are reliable and do not charge for their services and the programs/software they use can be trusted.

I have had them help me clean/fix more than one computer - including the one I am writing this on and everything bad was removed and I have had no problems since.

Nod32 can be a little over-sensitive sometimes, which is what makes it so good at protecting you. So I would trust it. But, that being said if you are confident that the tools you are downloading are from a reliable site like "Majorgeeks" you can right-mouse click on the Nod32 icon down by your clock and temporarily disable it until you get the cleaning program installed.

Don't know ... Uniblue makes some nice products but they do like to install a "suite" of links to all their products when you only want one.

I have also come across some programs that will recommend you remove or block the use of a competitors program. I have one that tries to tell me I should delete Malwarebytes ... don't think so!

hi Chuck...  thank you I see what you mean, really like oversensitive with virus protection.. little pop ups, kinda cool B) can now see how things became so messy without it

performance scan says 2 drivers are slowing performance, thought it good to try the driver scan on John's majorgeek site...  disabling nod32 would leave me so...  exposed  :blushing:

John thank you, this was my thinking also, what else can get in when you only wanted 1 item from a link... your thoughts on allowing prirform cleaner to delete temp int files?

last night for 30 seconds... the voices again! quickly closed open wdws, ran malware & ASC scan... nothing found, still strange :S

may I please ask your advice here also: wdws updates wants me to update the following...

silverlight (what is this?)

IE 9 (saw it, do not like it)

IE 10 (same)

and 27 updates for MS office, MS works and infopath.. (do Not use MS office ever)

--> may I, can I (or should I) delete these updates? they are IMPORTANT updates, must they be installed? does NOD32 close for this?

again, many thanks :D

You should allow the updates. Silverlight is a Microsoft product that just drives me crazy. When I remove it, next thing I know Microsoft has reinstalled it. I forget what its for, but it won't hurt your computer. I hate Internet explorer. There are others that are so much better browsers. I use Google Chrome, and then there is Foxfire. Some use that one. Even if you have internet explorer on your computer you can just use another but you need the updates to keep safe, at least I believe you do. Someone else probably knows that better than me.

Let the updates run or you will go crazy with messages about them. At least that's my thinking.

yes, mine too! :wall:  constant update reminders! ok thank you, they never seem to never complete the update download but will try again... sister Vernalee how 'bout your temp int files using piriform cleaner... ok to let it delete these? a LOT of these??

a recent down load, either malware or Nod32, asked to install 'chrome'... I clicked 'yes'...however it didn't seem to download it...after you download Chrome, do you uninstall IE?

No to uninstalling IE, Microsoft just reinstalls it, at least that's my experience. Yes to deleting the files, make sure you check on the left hand side what you want deleted, I check all the ones on IE and all but the last on the WE. I wouldn't mess with the others. After you do all that, run Clean Up, and it will take any residue from files left and remove them. Happy computing. I'm on my way home in a few minutes, for my 7 off. Grumpy will be happy for a couple of days anyway.

do you uninstall IE?

I think Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are integrated, which means you cannot run a Windows computer with Internet Explorer installed. This poses no problems though, as it is "out of the box" that way.
