  1. Shockingly enough, I NEVER required my children to memorize the times tables... but we do math in every day life (some workbooks too, but really a lot in every day life). When Lela got to be 3rd grade age, I thought hmm.. maybe I should have her memorize the times tables like they do in school.. so I gave her a sheet of them, and told her to memorize them.. she looked at it, an said.. moooom... this is dumb.. seriously you want me to memorize this, we know all this, why would I sit and memorize this when I know all the answers. So I took the sheet back from her, and told her to recite to me all of it.. (with out looking at the sheet) and yeah.. she knew all the times tables 0-12.. with out ever having to memorize the "times tables"! lol So after that I was like, well it's kind of silly I guess to do that when they already know their math from life! The other day my 7 year old, was playing with my youngest sister.. they were doing "dress up".. my daughter was painting my sisters nails.. she said, while I will do this for free now, because we are kids, when I grow up, I'm going to do nails for a living. Then you will have to pay me, but I will only charge you a dollar because you're my aunt.. but well you know it will have to be 1.08 cause of tax you know! My little sister started laughing her head off, and was like how does she know about tax, and how to add it up?? Uh life.. they want to buy something at the store, they better know how much they need to buy it, including tax! I think it's really difficult for non-homeschooling people to understand how homeschooling can work, and what it looks like.. so kind of hard to give advice when you haven't experienced it and done it...
  2. BTW, saying a broad statement that MOST parents are not involved with their children who homeschool, is again ignorant. I don't know any one like that at all. It would actually be the opposite, or Jesus parable would be meaningless. All fathers/mothers love their children... and most try to do their best for their children. YES, the majority of parents, are going to love and care for their children MORE then strangers at a school. I know it's shocking. But, Jesus didn't use parables of how a school teacher would love a child so much they would do xyz for them. He actually used the parable that a father would love their children, a mother would gather them. Not a school teacher would gather then to them. Yes, most parents love and care for their children. More then school teachers... it's shocking how people have been brainwashed to think that "officials" are better qualified to care for children then parents. But, this line of thinking would make us as witnesses obsolete. MOST religions also believe to be a minister you must go to higher schooling, like college. Funny thing is, MOST while in college to be ministers lose their faith in God from the schooling! I know my brother in law, originally went to college to become a pastor... and that is exactly what happened. He lost all faith in God, based on the classes he had to take to become a pastor! And then after that happened to him, we read the stats that this is not uncommon. But, I guess us witnesses are not qualified to be ministers because we didn't go to college to become ministers either. That's how it reads. When people say these things. It's just something to think about.
  3. oh my it's not about the disagreeing in my opinion, but about the forming opinions out of ignorance. Embrace common core... um no.. never. If it really was about having every one learn GOOD things and the same GOOD things, that would be different. In my state a LOT of it is about embracing that homosexuality, as well as transgender. Figuring out if your brain says you are a girl or a boy, no matter what your genitals say. (yes they sent elementary school children home with a gingerbread man, and said to put what ever genitals in the genital area, and then to write in the brain area what gender they felt they were even though there was different genitals... yes this was ELEMENTARY age children. Math, common core... that's a joke, in REAL life, you need to know what the REAL answer is. Not well if you did it this way and even though you got the answer wrong you are right because you did it how they said, but if you didn't do it how they said and you got the answer right, you are wrong. That will make no sense when they have to pay rent, and groceries... well they did it right, so now you should just take the money they hand you even if it's wrong amount? Also about disabilities, I actually know many many children who are homeschooled with them. With parents being with them all the time, most do know their children have them or not. There is other ways of having them evaluated... there are drs, and such. Sadly I have a niece and nephew, main streamed in public school their whole life, NOT special ed, they are in high school and can't tell time or write their own names, but they are on the honor roll! And main streamed classes. They are being passed on cause they make the school a lot of money. I have no idea why they would be main streamed, doing "regular" work, being on the honor roll in high school and can't spell their own names... or tell time... or even read the temperature on the wall. My 9 year old has been able to tell me what the temperature is in our house since she was at least 5... I asked the 17 year old niece to look and tell me and she just stared at my blankly, and said it has numbers??? Yeah. I'm not too impressed with their education.
  4. I'm not sure if you are keeping up with current events or not Alba, but the slave said over a year ago they will NOT ever again send brothers for higher education like that. There was a whole broadcast on this. The FDS teaches us MUCH about government through the year books and how it works. Do you think brothers in Africa NEED to know about American government? Highly doubtful, and just one way that propaganda gets us, into thinking our country is so important, and more important then other countries and so every one needs to know all it's ins and outs. When you look deeply at most of what is taught in school, just like the old BE book (a FDS published book) it brings out that almost all secular history is going to be skewed (propaganda) to the country of origin. I have seen that first hand in reading history books in school. Sooo much propaganda that is twisted so that you think your country and people are so much better then others. I find the slaves publications NEVER do this. They state the facts about how the governments have worked and what they have done, without putting one country or peoples above another. And even if the slave was to continue to send some for higher education (which they clearly stated they would not do again), how many would do that? That was a very very very minute percentage of people selected for that. And JUST as those brothers were taught that AFTER they were grown ups, people do not just stop learning once they turn 18... IF something like that would be needed to know, some one at 18, 20, 25, etc could learn it if they needed to. It wouldn't make or break a person that they didn't learn it at 16, instead of 20... We all continue to learn every day... that's how Jehovah made us. ;) But, my main point is, why would we as witnesses want to base our children's education on a worldly government? I personally NEVER want my children being lawyers, I have a sister and brother in law, and two uncles who are lawyers... no thank you.
  5. NY is one of the more regulated stated Pauline, but yes HSLDA is a good start. I would most likely join them if I was going to homeschool there. As there is a LOT of regulations there. But, it can be done. I knew a few sisters in NY who homeschool. One lives in Queens. You have to send in stuff to the school district pretty regularly and such I do know that.
  6. of course we are not lawyers. I am not trying to offend any one. But, I am only stating the facts. Facts are facts, it's not like I am making things up or something. And I think I am allowed to say what I would do... it's a personal choice/opinion. And I stated it exactly that way, what I would do. Not every one has to do what I do.
  7. also to the state you are a public school student, otherwise they legally would not be allowed to collect money for your child.
  8. legally though it is not homeschooling, it is schooling at home of course. And it is a option of course but it is still public school. And HSLDA and any other homeschool legal defense lawyers will not defend that as a homeschool. It's the same to them as if you are using a brick and mortar school. It is public school at your own home. But, legally it is not homeschooling.
  9. I'm not saying we do not teach any government, but to me, what does the that test have anything to do with anything that is important to Jehovah? Do you think any of these things of this worldly government will carry over to the new system? I highly doubt it. For that reason we do not really focus on it. We focus on the real life, and important matters. Which is Jehovah's laws and principles. He does not care if we know American Law, Australian Law, or Mexican Law... we are all the same in his eyes. I do not like to focus too much on worldly government as it's passing and anything you find on it will be nationalistic propaganda for the most part. What we do focus on, is in our literature and year books. It goes into the truth about governments and how they have been ran and why. And is completely accurate.
  10. However, legally that is not homeschool John. It is schooling at home, but if you needed legal defense to help you continue they would not consider this homeschool, it is just public school at home, and is just as regulated if not more so then brick and mortar public schools. I would/do run as far from them as possible. I really do not care if the state makes money off me and my children or not. lol I am more about giving my children a good education. Which I do not feel public education is. Since it is mainly ran by Satan, as is anything ran by the government, and it's so full of lies and propaganda to promote nationalism, and national agendas, instead of non partiality or Jehovah's agenda.
  11. Every one is individual. But, when the Knowledge book came out in the 90's the brothers were really wanting us aiming at 6 months from study start to baptism! ;) Before that the average with the Live Forever book was around 2 years. What ever speed the student does it at, as long as they are doing it for the true love of Jehovah is ok. The elders will keep into consideration the life changes needed, etc.
  12. there's lots of reasons. Cost is one... another is our water basin is high where I live. IE if you dig a hole deep enough for a cellar/basement it will just fill up with water and you will have a lake not a basement. Also why we have a lot of "lakes" if you want a lake or a pond in your yard, literally you can dig your own! And a lot of people do! lol A third reason is, the kind of dirt. Much of the dirt in our area is Clay, which when it is wet it will expand, and when it is dry it will get smaller... this is also not good on a basement/cellar, it will cause cracks in your basement/cellar, and then leaks, mildew/mold, and deterioration of the foundation, where eventually the home will fall down. What isn't clay, is sand... ie remember what the Bible says about building a house on sand, well you can here, but on stilts cause the stilts will move with the sand... and keep the house correct, but doesn't work for/with a basement.
  13. I got it bound at Kinko's/Fed Ex. It cost about 9 dollars, and that was with laminating the cover and back... with their thickest laminate... sooo worth it!
  14. lol Norma, I have a lot of it for life too... look for Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus, it's a sisters website and she has a life one too! lol This is the homeschool one, but she has like a life manager or home management something like that, one too.

How I Found the Truth

  • How I found the Truth
It's a pretty long story. I was about 7 years old, and in the second grade, when my best friend who lived across the street started studying with a pioneer sister who found her in the door to door work.

My friend quickly started sharing with me the things she was learning. It really impressed me. Then she showed me she was being taught out of the My Book of Bible Stories. I had that book at home. My mom had studied when I was a baby but did not make any progress and the sister discontinued her study. Yet would come by every once in a while with new releases to share with my mom. One of them being the My Book of Bible stories when it was released when I was a toddler.

So I ran home and dug the My Book of Bible Stories out of my room, and had it all ready for the next Bible study. However, the sister was not as anxious to study with me as I was with her. So she would not study with me, and sent me home. That happened three weeks in row. Til, I said, No, I was not going to leave, that she couldn't make me leave since it wasn't her home. So she agreed to study with me. After that she walked me home to talk to my mom about studying with me. My mom said it was ok, and accepted the Live Forever book from her.

After the sister left though, my mom tried to talk me out of it. Said that they didn't celebrate holidays, and if I was going to study with them, I couldn't do both things... I either had to be a witness or be baptist I couldn't do both. I said that was ok, every thing we had learned today we had read in the Bible, so if they don't believe in holidays why should we? (I went to Baptist my whole life and never was taught anything directly from the Bible.). Meanwhile my mom never cracked open the Live Forever book at all. And the sister would ask her about it each week.

It wasn't long and my friend was going to the meetings, well I wanted to go to the meetings too!!! But, the sister who studied with us had a lot going on in her own private life with her teenage sons, who were very rebellious, and at the time in and out of prison. She would get side tracked at the prison visiting them and forget to come and pick us up for meeting. So I would beg and beg my mom to take us. So one night, a Friday TMS night, she said ok, I will take you this one time, but do not EVER ask me again. I said ok. So she took us. But, never said anything about it afterwards.

Sunday rolled around, and we all got up and got dressed. Got in the car, and got to the corner where you had to turn right to go to Baptist or left to go to the Kingdom hall. My step father started to turn right, and my mom said no we are going left this morning. He said we will never get to the Baptist church if we turn left. And my mom said, we aren't going to Emanuel Baptist this morning, we are going Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall this morning. He said oh no we are not! And they sat and argued for a bit. And then he said ok, he would go, but not to ever do this to him again.

So we get to the Kingdom Hall, and go to the meeting. After the meeting I was wanting to introduce them every one, so we were at the back. And a elder came up and asked my step father our names. And my step father said, My name is Eldon D, this is my Girlfriend Theresa C., and her daughter Heather R. And the brothers said, all these last names and you all live in the same house? And my step dad said yes. He then said, why don't you marry Theresa? My stepfather said, I ask her every summer, and she says next winter, and every winter she says next summer. The brother turned to my mom and said, why don't you marry him? She said, because I was already married once, and vowed til death due us part, neither of us are dead yet. And right now, we're living in my house, and if I get mad at him or don't want to be with him any more, I can say hit the road jack!

The brother said, oh Eldon you need a Bible study! And they set up a Bible study for both my mom and step dad that day!

Later when asked why my step father agreed to a study, he said before the meeting began he didn't think JWs believed in Jesus, but after hearing them pray through his name, he knew that must be wrong, and was interested in what the truth was about them.

We all continued to study and grow in the truth. My step father and mother were baptized about 2 years later. I was approved at the same time, but was scared of being so young. So I waited til I was 11 and was baptized at 11 years old, in 1986 district convention.
