SUV OIL ISSUES

Recommended Posts

Am not quite sure where to put this question, so if its in the wrong forum, please move to its proper place please.

A sister in my congregation has been having major issues with her Honda CR-V/2011 model.  The vehicle has less then 60,000 miles on it.  She hears grinding sounds coming from her engine (not brake area).  She said she has taken it to her Honda dealership several times in the last two months, and they can't tell her what is wrong with it even when they put it on a machine to test it.    She is going tomorrow again to the dealership to have them recheck the issue.  There is no oil leak on the ground where she parks her vehicle, nor is there any oil leak on any ground (like the kingdom hall).   There is a leak in the engine, but no one at the dealership is giving her a good answer and she said she cannot afford to purchase another vehicle and or put in a new engine.   Are there any mechanical brothers and or sister's in here who might have a clue that you could share with me and I can give to the sister?   If the vehicle has no oil in it, it can damage the piston's, valves, and whatever else is in the engine.  I didn't ask her if they checked her cooling box to see if there was oil in that.  I'll get back with you who can respond later.   Would greatly appreciate some answers if possible.

Thank You

Sister Lisa

I don't know she has a warranty on this or not. To me the main problem is that she is a female. I think she needs a brother or 2 to go with her on this when she goes back to the dealership. If she has grinding sounds from engine, it might the the gears, camshaft, etc. I hope the best for her. And believe me many car dealerships and car shops take advantage on females. It is sick world out there.

They do, they try to take advantage of someone with no experience what so ever.  I opened her hood once (before this happened) and asked her if she knew where the dip stick was for the oil.  She said she couldn't find it.  Not even the dip stick for the transmission oil.  So I knew she was going to be "had" at any dealership that she took her vehicle too.  I wanted to go with her, but she has these weird hours after work, usually its to dark for me to drive to meet her and the dealership closes at 6pm.  She gets off of work around 7 or even 8pm.  I did some research on line and sent her some options.  Hopefully she won't be taken for a ride.  I offered her my two mechanics who do an excellent job on my vehicle when  service it.   Thanks for your help Glenn.   And too, at the dealership garages, you can't go and see what they're doing, especially if they know you don't know what they're talking about.  I stopped taking my car to dealerships a long time ago.  Jehovah helped me find these two guys up the road from me.  They've been doing my car (s) for the past 5 years, never had any trouble at all.  Very honest for two worldly guys (father and son).  They were recommended by a brother in my hall.

Try to get her to those two guys. I hope this helps. Plus, I know a sister in our congregation went to a recommend place for a car problem and  she need over $2,000 of replacements, then she went to a another place and it was just couple hundred dollars. That place that they was asking for over $2,000 didn't check out her car and tried to take advantage of her because she is a woman perhaps she is black too.

This story sounds familiar!  It was on NBC news, they did a story on how some women were taken advantaged by auto shops and dealerships.  The guy who did the show, had a certified mechanic remove a small part that only costs $.50 cents at the time.  The producer of the news story, was the "am the bait" woman who went to various shops in the New York City, area.  One told her (and he never opened the hood of her SUV), "your pistons are shot, there's liquid all over the engine.  We can fix this for $2500.00."  She told them she'd think about it.  They pulled her SUV out of their garage.  She watched them and so was the hidden camera.  They were filmed (even the SUV in their garage, where they didn't so a thing to the truck).  She went to several other places, and all these various prices and "oh your engine is burnt, you'll need a whole new engine."  One last place she went, finally got a honest person, he popped her hood up and right away, saw the issue.  He went in his story, and got the part.  She paid $1.00 for it.  These people don't care what race you are, they just think us girls are stupid.   This dear sister, works all day in an office, she is not vehicle savvy.  She has always taken her vehicles to be worked on through dealerships.   So when I suggested to her "if this doesn't work with the dealer, tell me and I will make an appointment with my two guys."  She said, let me see what they do Monday!   I know the dealership is giving her the run around, I mean they know what the problem is, but because they aren't making any money (due to her warranty) they won't touch her vehicle.   So, I have to wait, but in the meantime, her SUV is losing oil, and today she went to Wal Mart and bought her oil.  It's synthetic brand, expensive.  That is what they told her to use because this is what she had on her warranty, the most expensive oil.   I don't know to much about vehicles, but I do know where my oil stick and transmission stick are, and my sparks plugs and valves.  I know where the oil filter is, and who knows maybe a gasket or seal is broken.   But my guys can find it and fix it.  I hope she will call me next week after she gets her SUV back from the dealership.

Too bad Car Talk is not on anymore! I'll show this to my husband later tonight, he might have an idea of what it could be.

Thank you.  The dealership told the sister "its a mystery."  I told the sister, no its  Babylon the Great, that's bigger MYSTERY!   I think if they go under the hood or under the engine, and change the seals around the oil rod, or the gasket surrounding the oil pan, it might help out.  I doubt it, since they haven't found anything wrong with her vehicle, except there is NO OIL in her crankcase!

My husband has some questions.

How do you know there is a leak if there are no stains on the ground? Is there smoke coming out of the muffler and if so, what color is it? White, blue or black?

Here are some of his ideas:

If there is an oil leak from the front of the engine it might be a crank shaft gasket, but that would make oil leak onto the ground...

If the car has low oil pressure due to the oil pump not working correctly it could make the timing chain loosen and make the grinding noise.

If there is blue smoke coming from the muffler it's not leaking the oil, rather it is consuming the oil and that could be the piston rings-but that is not likely on a new car.

All indications are that we won't get a decent answer from anyone on these questions...

Who said there is no oil in the crankcase? There is no way of knowing this if you don't pull the pan off the engine.

Sure, a 'grinding' noise can come from the timing chain, but I would describe that mostly as a rattle rather than grinding.

A vital question: How does it run?

Another vital question: Why has it been at the dealership for this time?

It's been at the dealership several times since last month.  There is no oil leak on the ground anywhere and its synthetic which (according to my mechanic) burns but you don't see the fumes coming out the exhaust pipe.    The dealership is going to take out the engine and send it off to be stripped down and find where the parts will be replaced with new ones.   If this doesn't work, and she still has issues, she is going to sue Honda and get a Toyota.   The dealership did a oil consumption test and they noticed that after she had added 2 quarts of oil last week, the oil was down below 1 quart.  So there is something wrong for sure.  My mechanic's both said that the engine has to be taken apart and see where the problem lies, but even that is no guarantee!

This strange usually Honda are good. If she gets a Toyota make sure it is very good. About 10 years ago they had some cars with crack engine in it.Believe me I had one, but I had a 50/50 warranty on it, but they fix it for free and it ran like brand new. The dealership never had one like this.

Also, if she get used car, try to get a warranty on it and run that car to death before that warranty runs out. Usually the warranty doesn't last long.

If they find something wrong and fix it, I doubt that she'd have any room to sue, would she?

Anyway, something is happening and it should lead to a resolution. As long as they don't come back and claim she's been over-revving the engine or done something that might cause it harm.

Please keep us posted in a detailed fashion, using exact terms.

Some cars when they get to higher mileage don't like pure synthetic oils. Try semi-synthetic oil - of type recommended in owners manual. Changing oil brands can make a car burn oil - not supposed to with newer oils - but I just experienced that for myself - burned a quart in 2500 miles ( across the US - up and down high elevations ) and 1/2 quart on return 2500 miles. Went back to my normal high mileage oil and brand. Not synthetic not even partial - just high mileage Penzoil. If you change brands - run a cleaner in old oil 1st then change oil & filter.

Hi all, thanks for all your beautiful input.  She got he SUV fixed.  The dealer took the entire engine apart, and found out that her seals around her oil case were cracked and instead of oil leaking on the ground, it leaked into her engine and just burned it all up.  She had that done under her warranty.  So far so good, she has had no more issues with that Honda SUV.   I told her next time (if there is  a next time in this system) get a Toyota!

Unless there's something there I don't understand, that cannot happen...

The oil seals would only allow oil to leak onto the ground, inside the timing chest (which would find its way to the ground) or to the transmission housing (and again, onto the ground).

At least it was fixed under warranty, but it would be nice if they hadn't lied to her.

A Brother that I know used to fix TV's (back when people still fixed them). One time I asked him what was the best brand TV to buy. He told me he fixed ALL Brands.

I told him I knew that, and that is why I was asking him.

He again told me "I Fix ALL Brands" - the point was (as he spelled it out) - they ALL break. He said one brand was not really better than any other brand ... that they ALL have to be repaired - some maybe more than others, but in the end, they ALL break.

I know just as many people who have had vehicle trouble with Toyota's, Honda's, Nissan's, Chevy's, Ford's, etc ......
