Tauma.... longest word

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about your comment Shali - yeah it's complicated to us - but the Maori much like many cultures like to tell stories and obviously they were less impressed about the size of the 'hill' and so created a story around it in its title.

I guess Maoris of old had a lot of free time and could afford to use long placenames.

A bit like the Bible, when Moses spends two chapters explaining something that we would now express in a simple table with a couple columns and twelve rows. :) People back then lived calmer lives and didn't mind taking longer to express their ideas. We are always in a hurry now and any long explanation makes us impatient.

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the name of a little hill here in New Zealand.

The meaning of the above title is : The mountain or hill where Tamatea , the man with the big knees ,  climber of mountains and swallower of land who travelled around, played his nose flute to his loved one.

This is the longest word in the English vocabulary (Maori didn't have a written language until the English came along) and second longest word for a place in the world. The longest is either Welsh or Irish - can't remember.

It has been shortened to Taumata for obvious reasons ... and is located in the Hawkes Bay which is on the East Coast of the North Island.

Just thought you guys would like some interesting trivia.

Thanks, Stormswift. I do like trivia. Has there been a thread on that? (Yet?) I think if I dared utter this word aloud, you would certainly detect my New England accent. Ayuh.
