Letter: Jehovah's Witnesses served 'burnt crust' of religious cake

In response to the letter “Religion has no place in American Government” (Oct. 10), Mr. David Ryan stated “Christians have eaten only the metaphorical icing off Christianity while leaving the harder to digest parts untouched.”

Jehovah's Witnesses have voluntarily eaten the “burnt crust” off the bottom of the figurative cake pan. Personal salvation has never been at the forefront for Jehovah's Witnesses. The vindication of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah's name is their top priority.

For example, of the 20,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in Nazi Germany during World War II, 10,000 were imprisoned, including 2,000 sent to concentration camps, 1,200 dying in custody and 250 executed. Jehovah's Witnesses were the most intensely persecuted of the Christian denominations in Nazi Germany, with Hitler declaring “This brood will be exterminated in Germany”. While not minimizing their suffering, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and the handicapped could not avoid the death camps once captured. Jehovah's Witnesses, however, could renounce their faith with a simple signed document pledging their allegiance to the sovereign state. This signature would have allowed them to walk of their own free will out of forced captivity. They instead, by and large, chose to partake of the “burnt crust” and remain in custody.

During the tumultuous period of 1938-46 there existed no group more hated in America than Jehovah's Witnesses. At every turn on the local and state levels their freedom of religion was challenged. Thus they brought some 23 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court to defend and establish constitutional rights enjoyed by all today. Justice Harlan Stone declared “they ought to have an endowment in view of the aid they give in solving the legal problems of civil liberties.”

More recently during the ethnic cleansing between the Hutu and Tutsi warring factions in Rwanda in 1994, some 500,000 people 8 million were brutally massacred in tribal conflict. Sadly, some 70 percent claimed adherence to one major Christian faith, but this could not appeal to their moral senses, for 1 in 16 lost their lives. Of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1 in 6, some 2,400 lost their lives for their strict neutrality. Not one person died at the hands of a Jehovah's Witness. Instead, both Hutu and Tutsi Jehovah's Witnesses stood side by side protecting each other, to their peril.

Jehovah's Witnesses adhere to a strict neutrality in political affairs of this world, just as their leader Jesus did when he walked the Earth, refusing kingship in this world's political system. Mankind's never ending cycle of war and conflict cannot change heart conditions of individuals any more than his legislative laws can; rather, that is the domain of the tenants of true Christianity, the tenants that Jehovah's Witnesses work so hard to follow.

True, we usually take with a grain of salt how secular authorities may view us because for every one positive article, there are 100 more that will cast a negative spin about the divine work we're engaged in. (Side note: It's maddening at times having to sift through encouraging videos on YT when the anti-jw videos creep up right next to them.)

I agree with the above comments though, it was a nice article to read.

Note: I remember an article in the Awake written sometime after the genoicide (circa 2005/2006) that approximately 400 of our brothers and sisters died, not the 2,400 indicated in the article. Can someone confirm this?
