JW.ORG: 1108 languages and growing!

Recommended Posts

Well the Romany were originally nomads, no need for them to have a written language; that came with time.

Their language definitely comes from India; the phrases, the way it sounds, plus their features all indicate they come from India.

For centuries, because of their strange customs, and different culture, and way of life from the rest of Europe, they faced harsh mistreatment, even genocide.

Even today, many people in Europe still hate and fear them; the fact that their languages are in JW.ORG shows that God still values them.

Thank you Brother John for your post. My list shows only two languages added.

They are in alphabetical order:

1106   Betsileo Madagascar; it's widely spoken

1107   Kabuverdianu (Barlaventu) Cape Verde; about 900,000 speakers

If the count number goes down like before, we will have to see.

Konkomba

is no 1108 Spoken in Northern Ghana by about 5.000 people

Mahorian (Arabic)  spoken in French Mayotte has been removed Mahorian (Roman) is still on the list

Because of this removal my list was out of sink, so now I will check my list differently

Thank you to ALL for the input - to answer the conundrum. 🙂

That's interesting. I've noticed before that in Mahorian (Arabic), there were no publications available. So maybe it will come back soon

Thank you so muchemoji847.png

Isn't it interesting that some languages are added to the list, but not one publication is available? Why list them? Does someone have an idea why the organization does this?

The thing is...there are also some unlisted languages that have publications "issued" at some point.

I think they existing in the list means there is a potential congregation (or group) using it, because if it weren't the case they would be removed, as it has happened before.

It happened with Esperanto at some point as almost all of the "native speakers" are also fluent in another language (Mainly found in Eastern Europe)

It has happened with Languages that can be written down in both Cyrillic/Arabic and Roman scripts as well, given in some most of the current speakers use the Roman Script (including those in you found in the ministry)

Same with some languages where originally we translated to one general "dialect" and then after we started translating into different variants (Creoles, Pidgins, Indigenous Languages, Portuguese)

Hope this helps🤗

Rodrigo, it's a real pleasure to welcome you on JWTalk. With your interest in languages it's not surprising that you honor us with your first comment here on my favourite topic. You certainly can be of great help here as we keep an eye on a niche part of jw.org. :welcome:
