I walked thru a small lava tube in the Volcano National  Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. .

This reminds me of something my son said once.  We lived in modern 4 bedroom house, then we decided to cut back and we moved into a mobile home. Not long after we came to Alaska and at the time there was nowhere to live, but we found a quonset hut for sale and finished into a cozy,, warm home. My son remarked that at the rate we were going, our next home would be a tunnel!  Maybe we should have looked for a lava tube!   We lived in our "tunnel" for 7 years and hated to give it up but when we moved out, my son and his family moved in.

Lava tubes are actually pretty stable, certainly well insulated. Mars is full of them; so it'd be the best bet for living there too. The mars orbiter is looking for one with water ice in it.
