Your Favorite Coffee?

Recommended Posts

It looks like this thread needs a fresh cup...

We have a Keurig coffee maker and Costco sells the Starbucks Medium Roast so that's what I usually have every morning. I love Kona coffee so occasionally I'll buy a small box of Kona coffee K-cups. We have the adapter for our Keurig so we can use ground coffee so if someone gives us coffee beans we can still brew a cup. We have some friends from Napa that are serving in Costa Rica and they brought us a small bag of Costa Rican coffee beans..mmm

Several years ago we were on the Big Island in Hawaii, we visited several coffee plantations and took the tasting tours. We tried the pea-berry coffee and loved it but it is more expensive.

I want to focus on something good instead of dwell on something upsetting I just learned.  So here goes.

If any of you are a fan of the cappuccinos, frappucinnos, etc.  you get at expensive coffee houses but have been unable to duplicate, I will share with you what I was taught.

Use your leftover coffee to make ice cubes.  Now, I don't use left over coffee but brew coffee in a French press just for this purpose. I also pour  coffee in a glass pitcher and refrigerate where it will not be hot and melt the cubes when ready to use.  You then need to buy a package of Xanthan Gum to make it the real deal.  The Xanthan Gum allows the coffee (or espresso) to meld with the ice and make a smooth drink --where the ice does not separate from the coffee.  I never could figure this out before someone shared this with me.  I would always just blend the coffee, flavorings, milk together but they never had the consistency the coffee houses had.  Now they do.

Just take your coffee cubes and place them in the blender (Vitamix, Nurtibullit Rx, Ninja blender, whatever) and pour in your milk--I use coconut almond milk, and then take about 1/4 tsp off Xanthan Gum and mix with a little (1 T of water) till smooth then add to the blender, your coffee and your sweetener of choice.  I use the different flavored syrups or the many different flavored creamers next to the milk in the dairy case.  Or you can add the powdered flavored coffees for many more choices.  Blend then pour in a pretty glass, add whip cream and drizzle on chocloate syrup or caramel syrup across the top of the whip cream.  You can shave chocolate or sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top if you really want to go all out.  Which I do. :D What's the point of doing all this if you don't go all our!

So delicious!

I have not been a coffee drinker for a long time. Someone gave my family some bags of Stumptown coffee beans.  The person was an unbaptized Bible Student, but I believe his baptized family owns a NY, NY cafe or business that features this product. I grind the beans up in my Ninja and make just a small pot (4 cup pot. I think that is 32 ounces) and use 3 heaping Tablespoons of the ground beans. I  made some for a sister that stopped by today, and she said it was delicious. She invited me to join her on a Bible Study  tomorrow. I may invite the Bible student and the Sister to have the session at my house so I can serve coffee. :tea: (or tea).  http://www.clickroastdeliver.com/Stumptown-Coffee-Roasters-C40.aspx?gclid=COTB26y3p8YCFZA9gQodT5EAOg

  • 2 weeks later...

A good ol' Americano is usually the way to go for me, from a one of our local coffee shops,or even Starbucks if I have to. Sometimes with a little sugar free hazelnut syrup. Lately I've been beating the heat with a tall iced toddy/cold brewed coffee.

Anyone ever tried Trader Joe's varieties? The Sumatra isn't bad. :)

Flat white or latte for me. We have a coffee machine and a grinder and we regularly buy espresso coffee beans from a local supplier. I cook the breakfast and my husband makes the coffee. He drinks a double shot flat white. I'm probably a coffee snob these days as I'll drink tea rather than instant coffee if I'm offered a hot drink.

If you order coffee down in Mexico most places will bring you a cup of hot water and a jar of instant Combate or Nescafe. Its not really very good, I'll just pass.

However we have brewed it over a mesquite fire in the morning and when it comes to a boil dump the grounds and drink it unfiltered, its pretty good if you don't mind picking coffee grounds out of your teeth all day long !   :toothbrush:

There was another thread about coffee that talked about Cowboy coffee. We figured out that most cowboys used their long mustache to filter the coffee grounds.  :D

How did you know ??? I have been drinking green tea lately because of the acid reflux...but green causes the same problem too.

We had our CO that weekend.

Try an English or Irish Breakfast tea, cut back on the bread and cookies. Works for me..

Has anyone tried the Civet Kopa Luwak Coffee. ?    :perplexed: That's the type of coffee mentioned in the movie Bucket List. It supposedly is consumed as berries then passes through the Sumatran Civet cat and is defecated then scooped up and brewed ?  I brought it up in this thread a couple of years ago as a joke, but I would never try it, don't care how good it's supposed to be... yuck!!!

Yes I've tried! We called it possum poo coffee We went to Bali with friends and they bought some. Was rather expensive too. I wouldn't rave about it but it was far better than the filter coffee that came with our Balinese breakfast

I had a revelation about 9 months ago. After 30 years of having coffee with everyone else, and ordering coffee when I'm out. Having tried instant, caps, all types of beans, I have decided I HATE coffee!!!

Tea all the way.

That's funny! I like a good cup of tea. I've learnt a few tips about tea and the main one I follow is always boiling fresh water and not reboiling water sitting in the kettle. It makes a difference to the flavour.

I have toured several coffee plantations in Hawaii and each of them told me that a dark roast coffee has less caffeine than a light roast coffee, that's why the light roast or blonde coffee is served in the morning and dark coffee may be served in the evening.

I recently read that information is correct however since not all beans and grinds are the same, there may be more caffeine in some dark roast or medium roasts coffees than in a light roast or blonde coffee. The amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee is also affected by the volume of beans used to brew the coffee since the volume of beans is affected by the roasting process.

Per Wikipedia;

Caffeine content varies by roast level. Caffeine diminishes with increased roasting level: light roast, 1.37%; medium roast, 1.31%; and dark roast, 1.31%. However, this does not remain constant in coffee brewed from different grinds and brewing methods. Because the density of coffee changes as it is roasted, different roast levels will contain respectively different caffeine levels when measured by volume or mass, though the bean will still have the same caffeine.

Fiona, I feel the same way. When Starbucks move 2 miles from the house, I thought I would try some. I found that I could stand flavored coffee with breve and everything else in to hide the coffee. It costed 2 arms and a leg so I gave up. I did fall in love with their green without sugar and extra water. Tea all the way for me.
