C3-Class Coronal Mass Ejection Headed Our Way

Recommended Posts

SOLAR TSUNAMI AND CME: Sunspot AR2859 erupted on Aug. 26th, producing a C3-class solar flare.

The flare, however, was not the main attraction. The eruption also caused a massive "solar tsunami."

Watch the shadowy wave ripple across the sun in this false-color ultraviolet movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

The expanding circular shadow is a wave of hot plasma and magnetism. Based on the time it took to reach the next sunspot, halfway around the sun, the tsunami was traveling faster than 110,000 mph.

Solar tsumanis always herald a CME, and this one was no exception. Soon after the tsunami broke, SOHO coronagraphs detected a CME.

The storm cloud appears to be heading for Earth, albeit somewhat off center. NOAA analysts are looking at the CME now, using computer models to determine its arrival time.

Our guess: Aug. 30th.

The aurora ring is dipping down my way.

So, around August 29 or 30, barring clouds, or a shift in the ring,

I may be in for a fantastic evening of Northern Lights viewing. :D

Or the whole area will be wiped off the planet like a wet sponge. Sounds exciting! 🤣

Do you have an sky app

as well, if so which one do you prefer?

I do not currently have a sky app.  My phone's internal storage is full of bloatware that came preinstalled on it, and my SD  card is filled with all the JWLibrary downloads.

So, no memory left for a sky app.

Debloat your phone. Samsung is easy but Apple products are bloated to the core.

You will void any warranty so wait until contract up and phone is Yours!

I have an old S4   i337m 16 Gb on board ( 64 Gb sd card ) just updated to Android 11 today loaded with my choice - sort of - apps using 9.23 Gb internal leaving over 6 Gb free instead of 1 or 2

Consciousness, that annoying time between naps!

Awesome!!!

I have a 2015 Motorola Droid Maxx II.   So I'm not worried about voiding the warranty. :D

I managed to watch enough YouTube videos and read enough online articles to be able to change the phone's battery.

But I fear I lack the tech savvy to root my phone. :(    I know that, once it has been rooted, I can remove all the bloatware.

Until then, I just have to settle for being able to DISable all of that unwanted garbage.👍

You can gain a little space by deleting any publications in JWL that you don't use.

Or... upgrade to a spiffy Samsung that has a nice micro sd card slot. Buy a card with loads of storage... and download everything there!

My phone has 128gb internal storage and I have a card with 128gb on it. That's where all my photos, music, videos and JWL pubs go.  It's nifty!

I don't think the pubs go to the card, just the media goes to the card. If you download all of the books, magazines, etc, it stays in the internal memory.

Can someone that is more familiar with it tell me if I am correct?

With android if you go to about phone/tablet under settings and tap "build" several times it will enable "developer mode" positioned outside about and in there near bottom is a slide button to force apps to load to external memory.

There is also a slide near top that allows to restart in recovery or download mode plus restart system.

Forgot. Be prepared for a solar flare. 😝

Mine go to my card. I've made it do so.. 😉  Plus you have the option in JWL settings

Update: NOAA analysts have modeled the CME’s trajectory. They predict an Earth impact during the late hours of Aug. 29th, possibly sparking G1-class geomagnetic storms through midday on Aug. 30th.

Well, the sky is relatively clear tonight.

Alas, the aurora oval has shifted far to the north...too far north for me to be able to see the show. :(

But...I can dream of what it would have been like... :D

"What a great show," says photographer Jocelyn Blanchette, who took the picture from Fermont, Quebec.

The source of the display was a CME that struck Earth's magnetosphere the day before.  At first the impact had little effect. But then Earth entered the CME's strongly-magnetized wake. Our planet's magnetic field is linked up with the CME's, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm and a lovely auroral afterglow.

Maybe the oval will drop back down south for the second show? :D

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: One and perhaps two CMEs are about to hit Earth. The first, hurled toward us by  Thursday's solar tsumani (C3), is expected to arrive on Aug. 29-30. The second, ejected by Saturday's solar flare (M4.7), could come on Aug. 31-Sept 1. Neither CME is particularly bright or powerful; however, they could combine to produce G1-class geomagnetic storms.

Two new coronal mass ejections due to hit earth on September 1st and 2nd.

Quote

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Earth's magnetic field is about to get jolted by a pair of CMEs. Estimated time of arrival: Sept. 1-2.

NOAA forecasters expect geomagnetic storms as strong as category G2. That means people as far south as Idaho and New York (geomagnetic latitude 55 deg.) could see auroras.

THIS IS WHAT'S HEADING OUR WAY: Two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are heading for Earth. The first was hurled in our direction on Aug. 28th when sunspot AR2860 exploded. Later the same day, this happened:

spacer.png

Quote

A massive filament of magnetism erupted, producing a second CME.

Together, they are proceding in tandem toward our planet.

NOAA forecasters expect the CMEs to deliver a double blow separated by hours.

The first CME could spark a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm late on Sept. 1st.

The second CME could intensify the storm, boosting it to a moderately strong G2-class event on Sept. 2nd.

Storms like these do no damage to power grids or satellites.

They can, however, produce beautiful auroras at high latitudes.

A light show is possible in Scandinavia, Iceland, Canada, and even some northern-tier US states.

I may get another chance to see Jehovah's amazing strobe lights show, after all.:D
