What is "crypto"?  Is it fake money?

First there were coins: gold, silver, copper. The Bible mentions their weights only, talent, mina, drachma, shekel (tekel), ect. There is only so much metal to make into coins and when that runs out what do you do? Paper was the answer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_money  But paper is only money based on trust in the amount of gold in bank vaults, but it filled the need which coins could not give. Portability was a real plus. But what happened is that governments starting printing more paper money than the gold they had stored. Oops.

Then we had credit cards which invisibly created money that doesn't actually exist. The banks create it at whim. Every time you purchase something on credit, you create more 'money' but it really is debt. There is so much debt in invisible money that it cannot be kept track of.

"crypto" currency is yet another form of invisible money that gets created when used. It is supposed to be an extension of real currency but there is not enough gold in the world to back it. It purely exists inside of computers and if they fail, it all disappears. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-55645408  You almost get the feeling it is just another Ponzi Scheme but very sophisticated. https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/24/tech/crypto-2023-bitcoin-sbf/index.html

Remember that October 29 1929 was caused by speculators buying stocks 'on margin' (credit), which was money that existed at the whim of anybody that wanted to loan it out. It was like a giant bubble that got bigger and bigger then one day, POP.

Actually Gold mkt cap far exceeds Bitcoin & all other alt cryptos combined. Currently Gold mkt cap is ~$19 trillion & Crypto in total is ~$3.1 T

And to be fair, if computers fail, a lot of things would disappear, including JW.org and all the electronic information & media associated with it. That's one of the reasons why I lean towards a continuation of current technology after Armageddon, even if it takes angelic intervention to keep communications running, until we (TGC) have ourselves sorted :)

If everyone loses their cash in some sort of a disaster, then your cash will also be useless. Cash is fiat currency, meaning, it's valuable because government says, so. So maybe gold will be the least worse case, in, my opinion.

Looks like the fires are clearing up around bethel.

Tours and commuters will resume tomorrow, seems they have things under control. Still praying for their safety.

Our tour, booked for Friday, has been canceled per the email we received from the central tours desk 1 1/2 hours ago.

Good one. Keep in mind that crypto currencies need to have real money behind it but the way it is handled, that is debatable. Paper money has the backing of gold but does crypto have that same paper money to back it or the gold? Gold cannot represent the paper money twice with it also represented as crypto. Hmmm? It gets very complicated which is how it is abused. 'Can't have your cake and eat it too'

Friends, please remember this is a discussion board and it is easier to discuss news items when they are posted in the right topic in the right forum. Dumping every news item into one topic just creates a mess.

This is the PS, GT, & A thread, please stay on topic.
