I can see that the stocks are like a financial science in of themselves.

 

It depends on your goals and/or timing of your retirement and macroeconomics. There's no one answer that fits everyone.

 

I like playing the major ups & downs, but also have some funds I just let ride...

Some people think that Trump is fixing the economy like a doctor fixes a broken leg. It causes a lot of pain when he sets the bone in place for it to heal. OTOH, some think that Trump is breaking the bone. Oh well, not my zoo, not my monkey.

Years ago, I had my 401K trusted to the system. I was dwindling away, a few hundred, at a time. I went to the broker when our meetings went from 3 to 2. I had decided the system was sliding on its way out. 
I went to the guy who handles such, told him he needed to fix it, or, “I would pull it out and bury it on the hill”. I dont know the ramifications of such, but he put what i had in bonds. Them 2008 happened. I was safe. ( as safe as you can be in this system)
