Are there many JW programmers around you?

Recommended Posts

As for me, I've heard of such ones.. but never actually met them.

It's such a big field that requires lots of studies and research so it's hard even for the non-JWs to keep up with the recent knowledge.

I think when compared to other occupations, programmers are quite rare among JWs.

A friend of mine is now retired from programming and he used the very difficult machine code in addition to higher level languages associated with DB work. He was a rare one for sure.

One brother I know is/was a programmer. He programed in C# and C++. He did this for many years while he and his wife pioneered. He is no longer active as a programmer for a secular company because he now serves as a CO.

Another brother I know programs HTML (webpages). Last I talked with him he was one of the Overseers for jw.org at Bethel.

I was a programmer in the 1980s, programming in COBOL and RPG 400. I got baptized in '85 but continued in programming for a few years after. I tried doing part-time work so I could be a pioneer, but it was difficult managing my time. If the company I worked for had a problem with a computer program, they wanted it fixed immediately, not having to wait three days until my next work-day. I also did full-time, short-term projects for companies, which worked reasonably well. But my pioneering was somewhat unbalanced; during the times I worked, I was never in service during the week. And when I wasn't working (between contracts), I had to be in service every day for very long days.

No. In the long run it didn't work.

I've known a few, know of one brother in the area and also does a bit of network and configuration for LDC. Of course there's our brother Anthony Corbett who has open sourced a great deal of useful software. I've also found a few online in various capacities. There was someone on Neegr8tr posting for part time Django work.

I work as a programmer and IT specialist and my clients are mainly telecommunication companies from various parts of the world (billing systems etc). It is an interesting field of work and am interested to know if some JW works in an IT telecommunication sphere too.
