How did you feel about your first senior discount?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what the experience was for others who got their first senior citizen discount when they realize that's what they were going to get for the first time.

I went to a second hand store to buy something and first time in my life the cashier said something I didn't expect. She asked me do you qualify for the senior discount? Me? Was I really old enough for this? Starting at age 55 the store gave this to their customers. I'm 57. Obviously I thought it was awesome to get a break on the price so I loved that part but never expected to hear that. I personally don't feel old yet and many don't consider me that old, but to realize wow I now qualify for some senior stuff sounds strange to me. But I guess like with everything else it will sink in and be common place and since at the present time until the new system I can't do anything about getting older anyway so I will look at the good side of it in little things like this. Even though it still would be nice to be too young for it. Someday I'll be 124,676,345 years old and still won't qualify for any senior citizen stuff.

Not sure if I remember the first time I actually got a senior discount - what I do remember was that, as I approached the age I would get one at a couple of the restaurants we ate at ... they raised the age by five years, and I had to wait ... five years later they raised it again!

Now that I fully qualify without having to worry they will raise the age past my present age, I find not as many places even still offer a senior discount 😞

Not my first senior discount but my first family discount. My bride and I were four days married when we decide to go to a movie. We were in Fort Brag California staying in the nicest motel on our trip. We walked up to the box office and I  asked for two tickets. Gertrude interrupted me (not to be the last time) and ask for a family ticket. She said" We are a family now!"

I can still feel where her elbow hit me.

In my state of NSW when you turn 60 you can apply for a Seniors card if you work 20 hours or less.  Discounts are not that great with it. Though I remember using my Seniors card for the discounted bus travel which is $2.50 all day.  My car was in the mechanics so I had to catch the bus and loved getting my cheap ride.  However once you get the aged pension here, well thats another level.  Actually you can also get a pension if you care for someone like an older parent or sick child etc.  I cared for my mother before she passed away and got a carers pension.  When she passed away I thought the pension automatically stopped but I received it for a further 3 months.  I remember I was rapt because my car registration was due in that time so I still received the free registration given to pensioners.  Also because I was a carer, when she died I received a lump sum to help pay funeral costs.  From memory it was around $2-3k.  Now I’m on an aged pension and get lots of things either free or discounted.  I love the public transport cost of all day bus/train/ferry etc $2.50.  Cheaper utilities.  Some restaurants offer pensioner deal meals.
Its the only time I don’t mind being “old”.

I got my first senior discount as a joke and accident! I have a wry sense of humor and I was around 40. I was in Wendy's fast food and joked to the cashier not to forget my senior discount!

I was expecting him to joke back but he gave it to me. I even asked him if I looked like a senior and he said no. It was there policy that if a customer asks for a senior discount they had to give it with no questions to asked.

Now that I am 66, I ask everyone for a senior discount, some don't have any, some have a certain day and so forth.

For bein' done too soon "-Neil Diamond

A brother and I went to lunch after service on Wednesday and neither of us were really hungry, so we asked the waitress if they had a senior menu, hoping to get a smaller portion. She said no, they just give a 15% discount.

That's when you order something with enough that can be re-heated for later!

Yup. A chicken sandwich on a brioche bun. Upgraded the fries to steak cut sweet potato fries and asked for an aioli sauce on the side. :eat:
