No more pennies!! Kinda... (Fun news)~

Recommended Posts

I put this under fun news because it's not really important or depressing, just kind a fun topic

So, it seems that they are going to stop making pennies in the US next year when all of the blank pennies run out. Do you think this will make pennies now rare? Do you think people will start hoarding them? I know other countries don't have pennies, but it'll be weird. I mean I know most people use cards and not cash....Do you guys think the government will just eventually call out the penny as a whole and get rid of it, like older bills they take out of circulation? Will we talk about how back in the day we had a one cent piece, and our grand kids will be like "Sure thing grandma/pa time for your medication"

Canada got rid of pennies back in the late 1990s, and we've never looked back. Yes, it was hard to get used to at the beginning, since your total to be paid at the cash registers was rounded to the nearest 5¢. It's still that way today. If you pay by credit or debit card though, the exact amount is used. As far as I remember, no one was hoarding pennies or trying to make them collectors' items. Anyway, it was the end of an era, and we all said goodbye to our last pennies as they were traded in at the bank, although no one had tears in their eyes. Either way, I think banks will still accept these copper pennies if you still find some lying around as they are still worth 1¢, and put the exact amount in your account.

No, I don't miss them.

Without pennies…

How do you make change for nickels?

Without nickels…

How do you make change for dimes?

Without dimes…

How do you make change for quarters?

Without quarters…

How do you make change for half-dollars?

Without half-dollars…

How do you make change for a dollar?

(Romans 10:14) 14 However, how will they invest their dollars if they have not put pennies in the bank? …How, in turn, will they make change without the copper coins?

I have coin collections that I have not used in years.  I need to get them out and check them.  (I wonder what drawer I put them in!)  I have a plastic jar that has pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in it.  I need to take it to the bank and deposit them.  I always use a credit card for everything so not minting pennies will not affect me at all.

Prices on items have always ended with $.99 until now.  If they don't want to go up to the next dollar will all the prices now end in $.95?   I always use a credit card for everything so not minting pennies will not affect me at all.

Each penny costs nearly 4 cents — or $0.0369, to be exact — for the U.S. Mint to make and distribute.

Each nickel costs nearly 14 cents ($0.1378) to make and distribute. That price tag is nearly triple the five-cent coin’s buying power today.

Each dime costs nearly 6 cents ($0.0576) to make and distribute.

The quarter costs nearly 15 cents ($0.1468) to make and distribute.

I always use a credit card for everything so not minting pennies will not affect me at all.  And I pay the full statement balance each month.

There was a machine that dispensed stamps at my worksite years ago.  It dispensed dollar coins in change.  I would put in a $20.00 bill and buy one stamp.  It would give me correct change and nineteen (19) dollar coins.  I gave the coins to my son for his lunch money.  It was $1.00 back then.  I found out that some people working at the school thought some student was probably stealing from his parent's coin collection.  Nope!  The coins were worth exactly one dollar.

Years ago, the stores did not like dollar coins.  They did not have a place for dollar coins in the cash registers.  Now that pennies will no longer be used there will be an extra space for the dollar coins.  (The other reason the dollar coins were unpopular was that they were too similar too quarters and might cause some confusion.)

@Sheep dont yall have a dollar coin instead of a dollar bill, or is that another weird country

Yup. That's us (Canadians). We used to have a dollar bill, but those were taken out in 1989, and replaced by the "loonie" (with a loon printed on it).

And we also had a two dollar bill which was eliminated in 1996. It was replaced by a "toonie" (also spelled "two-nie") coin.

Bills in Canada are still used, in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. I don't think we have any of those (including hundreds) in coin form.
