8.7 Magnitude Earthquake Off East Coast of Russia; Tsunami Warning Issued

Recommended Posts

NZ Civil Defense has sent through warnings on our phones. We are on a Tsunami watch, expecting more dangerous waters rather than a Tsunami. Buildings have been washed away in Russia. Yet to know how it will affect everyone else. Let's hope it's all ado about nothing. Best case scenario.

We're okay here in Hawaii. Jobs were canceled and evacuated, and meetings were canceled for Tuesday and the brothers and sisters evacuated to higher grounds/buildings. We saw some minor flooding of the harbors on the north shores. We expected some wrap around tsunamis as well, but so far, damage is none to minimal. We're still under an advisory which has been downgraded from a warning.

Evacuation warnings are different from evacuation orders. According to ReadySLO.org, an evacuation warning “alerts community members in a defined area of a potential threat to life and property from an emergency incident.” They are urged to “be prepared to evacuate.” The National Weather Service previously said the tsunami was expected to arrive on SLO County shores around 12:35 a.m. SLO County Fire has issued an Evacuation Warning for the following areas of Los Osos due to Tsunami Advisory: SLC-178, SLC-179, SLC-180 and homes north of Butte Dr at Nevada Ct. Dang it - my favorite time to surf is at midnight when it is so dark I can't see anything  😉

Anyway, no news here in SLO other than a small blurb in the paper - see above.

note: 2 foot waves are typical here - surfs up

Scientific American magazine article excerpt:

How much of a Tsunami will occur after an earthquake is determined by the geology around the earthquake site.  It takes hours to determine the likelihood of a huge Tsunami.  Instead of waiting hours to calculate the all the variables.  The warning was given as a precaution instead of waiting for the calculations to be made.  The Scientific American article refers to it as 8.8.

I have a subscription to Scientific American magazine.  I cannot ethically post the entire article here.

EDIT:  The article below is on the internet, Anyone can read it.

There are 5 earthquakes that have been 9.0 or above.
