  1. That's the first one I linked in newer mini PCs. That also happens to be the most frequently sold Mini PC on Amazon. Spec wise it is fine for web use. There is a small number of users who had issues with them within the first few weeks, so I want to make sure you're aware of that, but that's sadly pretty common with most cheaper tech and dealing with random sellers on Amazon. It doesn't really offer any customer support. If you value reliability over value, you may be interested in a more costly PC from a major manufacturer... but I don't personally feel it's worth paying twice as much to get something from a major brand, since if something went wrong, I could easily do a clean Windows install or replace a bad component like storage. But I'm not most people. Personally, I would prefer this specific GMKtec G5 model/seller with the faster n97 CPU and a bit more RAM. https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-Nucbox5-Desktop-Computer-Windows/dp/B09Q8Z6VB7/ I might even prefer to buy it directly from their website to make sure I'm not dealing with a third party seller. https://www.gmktec.com/products/intel-alder-lake-n97-mini-pc-nucbox-g5
  2. The limitations on CPUs for Windows 11 are mostly arbitrary, though there are a couple of security reasons. Windows 10 will continue to work after Oct 2025, though it may no longer receive security updates. Technically the limitations on installing Windows 11 are pretty easy to bypass, you can manually install Windows 11 on very old hardware... but at least when it comes to my main desktop (my mini PC, laptop and handheld are Win 11) I'm content to stick to Win 10 as long as I possibly can. You can make either operating system more or less look the same as the other (sometimes for a price), but Windows 11 adds next to nothing in features (they even discontinued the Android subsystem), actually removed a few features, and bake yet more advertisements into the operating system itself.
  3. I can no longer recommend Chromebooks for Zoom as they have not kept up with the development of Zoom for Chromebooks. At some point the Chrome version of the app stopped working and they don't let you use the Android version anymore either, so you're limited to the Progressive Web App or a convoluted process to log in to the website each time. I'd noticed a few things not working on my Mom's and they have a few features missing compared to Windows. I wasn't able to fix it and ended up giving her my laptop.
  4. You generally need to know the same hardware specifications with any type of PC. That is, the CPU, RAM, and Storage for basic users. Brands don't matter too much. You want to meet a minimum threshold of performance from the CPU, which varies with model and generation, along with enough RAM and storage. At least 8GB of RAM and 256GB of Storage is fine for most people. Years ago I downloaded every single video in JW Library on a tablet which used 128GB of storage... 256GB might still allow you to download every video now (though it's very unlikely anyone needs to do that). The mini PCs that I linked there should be more than adequate in terms of performance for basic use cases (browsing, email, videos). For used, you would want at least a mid tier (i5) 8th gen CPU. With the new 12th gen+ chips, even the cheap n100/n97 ones are fine. Here's a short review of one of the cheaper GMKTec models.
  5. Used refurb machines, particularly business desktops, are often decent computers, but it largely depends on your use case (what are you going to be using it for?) and the cost/value of the purchase. Do you have a link to it? It says Intel i5, but it's important to know the actual CPU model and the cost to know if it's a good value or not. I see it also doesn't come with a monitor, which would add to cost. Anymore, when it comes to someone wanting a traditional desktop style computer for basic use cases (email, web, video, zoom), I will typically recommend a used (cheaper, more power/performance) or even new (modern, tiny, low power, silent) mini PC. They can be found for similar prices, but are much more modern, smaller, easy to access/upgrade and less power consumption. The only reason to have towers anymore is if someone needs a graphics card for games/video editing. Take a look around any time you go into a doctor's office/hospital, they're all Mini PCs that they auction off every few years. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335352119320 (no power adapter included on this listing, need to buy separately) https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-Desktop-Computer-Support-Ethernet/dp/B0CRKD4YQL/ https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-Mini-PC-Computer-N100/dp/B09Q8Z6VB7/ https://www.amazon.com/KAMRUI-AK1PLUS-Computer-Computers-Family-NAS/dp/B0CKWTPX4T/
  6. When it comes to most tech, don't consider buying anything older than 5 years unless you really know what you're doing. Used/refurbs can be great deals depending on the type of product. You don't need the best and newest, but higher tier previous generation stuff tends to have the best value. If all you want is a modern, fast tablet that can do everything most people need, you can't really go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite running Android, they regularly go on sale for $200ish. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Lite-10-4-FHD-Tablet-64GB-S-Pen-Included-Wi-Fi-Oxford-Gray/468424924 Easy to get a bluetooth keyboard case for that model or a keyboard with a tablet slot. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Bluetooth-Multi-Device-Keyboard-K480/dp/B00MUTWLW4/ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BYJ4RL77/ If you want a laptop, there are a few options. I have a cheap, technically slow tablet laptop with a 13" OLED screen that I got for $230 as a like-new return that I love, and because I was able to set it up properly to get rid of all the Windows bloat that slows it down, it was perfect for my light browser use cases and video streaming, even managed hosting Zoom okay. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09V1SNYTL/ However, most people would do better to get a Windows laptop with a 15" IPS screen, Intel i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, 256GB+ SSD, 8GB+ RAM in the $400 range. My typical recommendations are either the Acer Aspire 5 or Asus VivoBook lines. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B0BS4CLLYF https://www.walmart.com/ip/ASUS-Vivobook-PC-Laptop-16-Intel-Core-i5-13500H-CPU-8GB-RAM-512GB-SSD-Win-11-Home-Black-F1605VA-DS52/5085197427 If you're a stickler for Apple, just get whatever the newest Air model is and be ready to pay through the nose. You can easily find faster and reliable hardware for less elsewhere, but it lacks Apple's software/hardware integrated ecosystem.
  7. That depends a lot on your budget and needs/use case. Basic web browsing, email, Zoom, what else? When you say keyboard and mouse, I'm assuming you want a laptop, but most all tablets can use keyboard and mice as well. There are also touchscreen tablet/2-in-1 laptops.
  8. You can't, it requires their One User Interface version of Android and can't be installed on other devices.
  9. Yes. Leave the audio on Zoom. You must rejoin the audio before the meeting starts, of course.
  10. Am I the only one who gets irked when people call the memorial a 'celebration' of Jesus' death rather than a commemoration? I know it's technically a definition, but it just feels wrong. I'm so serious lately that I feel my negative attitude may be causing harm...

I know. Thank you. I'm just pedantic. I prefer it to be called the 'celebration of the lord's evening meal' and 'the commemoration/memorial of Jesus' death', not 'the celebration of Jesus' death'. It's too easy for my literal brain to misconstrue and seems like it would give people who aren't familiar with the hope the wrong impression.

The brother who gave our memorial talk tonight made a very nice statement. He said: "We´ve gathered here to commemorate and to celebrate. We will commemorate the death of Jesus and the greatest love shown to us, and we will celebrate the perspective his death gives us for the future".

      Brad Smith

      celebrate
      /ˈsɛlɪbreɪt/
      verb
verb: celebrate; 3rd person present: celebrates; past tense: celebrated; past participle: celebrated; gerund or present participle: celebrating

          1.
acknowledge (a significant or happy day or event) with a social gathering or enjoyable activity.
"they were celebrating their wedding anniversary at a swanky restaurant"
          h
          Similar:
          commemorate

          reach (a birthday or anniversary).
"the programme celebrates its 40th birthday this year"

      2.
perform (a religious ceremony), in particular officiate at (the Eucharist).
      "he celebrated holy communion"

I've done that myself on field service by accident, say "celebrate" instead of "commemorate". Think "celebrate" seems disrespectful and gives - at least myself - the mental idea of a loud party. "celebrate" seems disrespectful for the occasion.

  11. Remember to go to Home -> Settings -> Yeartext Language -> Off before the Memorial to disable the yeartext. Aside from adding the image to a playlist and setting it to Freeze, duplicate it a couple of times, add the first song (25?) after it and set that to Stop, add one of the duplicates after that, add the second song (18?) and set it to stop, and add the final image duplicate to the end. That way you can just manually advance the playlist cleanly with noone ever seeing the yeartext.
  12. I understand that many are not aware of or don't understand the copyright or trademark rules, but that is most definitely official artwork. You can see it here plainly on our website on the Memorial page: https://www.jw.org/en/jehovahs-witnesses/memorial/ There is no need for people to make such edits when they can simply link to the website.
  13. Friendly reminder: Please don't post or upload official artwork. https://www.jw.org/en/library/magazines/watchtower-study-april-2018/publications-personal-websites/ It's easy enough to get from the website, you can use a link to direct someone to the location on the website instead.
  14. That's not something JW Library supports. The best you can do is add the image to a playlist in that case, or set it as a wallpaper with JW Library second screen minimized, or use a different program.
  15. I use https://github.com/AntonyCorbett/JwlMediaWin, enable the fix and disable stay on top. This keeps it maximized on the second screen like normal, but if Zoom or anything else ever goes on the second monitor, it won't freak out and try to escape that display because Zoom takes priority. If we need to display Zoom on the second monitors, I go into the Zoom settings, enable dual display mode, win+shift+left & win+up the speaker window over to the second monitor to maximize it, win+down and win+shift+right when done, disable Zoom's dual display. Sometime's JWLibrary still messes up occasionally with the second window not popping up at all. Not sure if that's a software issue or if it has something to do with our main monitor setup running over SDI or something I'm not familiar with not switching over properly when we turn on the sound system, but toggling display on second screen and restarting it occasionally has still been needed. Particularly when JWLibrary has had audio issues during song playback, stuttering or playing the wrong thing, especially if we played music before the meeting.
  16. I don't know anything about NWT Reading, but it appears to have something to do with newer Android's security that isolates apps? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.searchwork.nwtreading
  17. Generally, when it comes to cheaper smaller tablet devices, I'll always have to recommend stock Android or Chrome OS. Though I do have a modern 13" Windows tablet (really, a laptop) myself. The older model ASUS Vivobook 13" Slate OLED. You can find them as low as $225ish on Amazon Warehouse, I managed to get a return for about that like brand new with everything (case, pen, keyboard etc) included. Slow CPU/Storage/RAM in general, but the screen is amazing for media. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-Display-Quad-Core-T3300KA-DH21T/dp/B09V1SNYTL/
  18. I think it's a bad idea. I check Reddit occasionally in searches when trying to find explanations/guides on how to do things, but it's full of advertisements which can be a snare and would also be sending those using it regularly links to 'similar communities/posts' etc that are from apostates. Why take so great a risk to try and change things there when it's so heavily polluted? Even those with pure intentions who join that community will only end up more inclined to look at apostate posts on the same website. JWTalk is already long established, ad free, and well moderated. Genuine witnesses should hopefully have already watched the governing body's warning in this video on staying far away from apostasy: https://www.jw.org/en/library/videos/#en/mediaitems/2021Convention/pub-mwbv_202305_2_VIDEO If they're going to be searching for a forum regardless of warnings to avoid apostasy and arguments due to whatever situation or need that they are in, it's much safer that they simply join here than Reddit. You can't change Satan's world. (Mark 8:15) And he warned them in no uncertain terms: “Keep your eyes open; look out for the leaven of the Pharisees (1 Corinthians 5:6, 7) Do you not know that a little leaven ferments the whole batch of dough? 7 Clear away the old leaven so that you may be a new batch, inasmuch as you are free from ferment. (Romans 16:17-19) Now I urge you, brothers, to keep your eye on those who create divisions and causes for stumbling contrary to the teaching that you have learned, and avoid them. 18 For men of that sort are slaves, not of our Lord Christ, but of their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattering speech they seduce the hearts of unsuspecting ones. 19 Your obedience has come to the notice of all, and so I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise as to what is good, but innocent as to what is evil. (1 Corinthians 14:20) Brothers, do not become young children in your understanding, but be young children as to badness; and become full-grown in your understanding.
  19. I don't know. Have you tried installing it manually? https://www.jw.org/en/online-help/jw-library/windows/manually-install-windows/
  20. On the contrary, there is one: the malcontent Myew.
  21. You're going to be hard pressed to find any modern games or recreation that don't violate *any* Christian principles, but here's a few that I feel comfortable recommending that haven't already been mentioned: Beat Saber Moving Out Scrap Mechanic Slime Rancher Stray SuchArt Tetris I haven't tried Grounded or PowerWash Simulator, but they look alright. Some people like Bloons, Minecraft, or Stardew, but others may find some of the content unacceptable. The majority of wholly acceptable games are going to be on the simpler side. I personally play a fair bit of ARK: Survival Evolved/Ascended (crafting, survival, taming/breeding/hunting dinosaurs in space stations) and other hunting/survival games, but I host my own personal servers only allowing co-op with friends and don't do any pvp.
  22. My first was a Pentium Pro 166Mhz with Windows 95 that my dad bought overpriced from a scammer in 1997. It had a giant scanner he used to sell antique automobile advertisements on eBay. We later upgraded it to Win 98 which I really wanted for some reason, probably games. I think it was a 40GB hard drive, don't remember the other specs. Quite slow and really poor graphics, but I used it for Need For Speed II and a lot of older games. Attempted to learn some C++ with help from a friend but gave up on programming pretty quickly. Ended up wiping it at one point when I was downloading/testing out C programs that might've been malicious and formatted it, which my Dad wasn't happy about. But then I learned how to install operating systems... Also one time I left something on top of the CRT monitor and liquid got inside, it shut off, but thankfully ended up working again a day later or two once it dried out. Learned a lot from all the times I messed up that computer. We didn't get a new one until 2004, an AMD eMachines with Windows XP and a DVD Drive which I don't recall the specs aside from again poor graphics which made me a sad poor gamer. Wasn't until 2007 that I finally had some income that allowed me to build my own, and progressed from there into a hardware enthusiast.
  23. If you want something new - the Acer Aspire 3 is the best laptop hardware deal atm at $250. Getting it out of "S Mode" to install Zoom is quite simple. You can always just plug an external monitor and wireless mouse/keyboard into it, and set it up so that the internal screen shuts off but the computer does not go to sleep when closing the screen. https://www.amazon.com/A315-24P-R7VH-Display-Quad-Core-Processor-Graphics/dp/B0BS4BP8FB/ AOC 27" 1080p IPS monitor linked above is now $100 and still best value IMO.
  24. Brother in our congregation figured out the solution. Simply 'leave computer audio' in the Zoom meeting, then rejoin it about a minute before it starts when you turn off the music and get everyone muted.
  25. AOC 27" IPS Monitor $110-115: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-27B2H-Monitor-Frameless-Compatible/dp/B07WVNBY1G/ Alternatively, if you want something even bigger, a cheap 32" 1080p TV would suffice. Walmart has some at $130. https://www.walmart.com/ip/TCL-32-Class-3-Series-Full-HD-1080p-LED-Smart-Roku-TV-32S357/1302917896 TV/Monitors will definitely be on sale during the upcoming prime day/black friday stuff though, if you want to wait to save. Pretty much any basic Logitech/Walmart wireless keyboard mouse combo would be fine, but if you want to splurge on something proper old school mechanical and wireless that feels nice: https://www.amazon.com/RK-ROYAL-KLUDGE-Mechanical-Connectable/dp/B08JD4D4FW/ Here's a cheap $8 wireless mouse I keep in my laptop bag, it's flat so not very ergonomic, but has thumb buttons and works with everything: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BYJ4RL77/ Camera: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Webcam-Meetings-Streaming-Built/dp/B0BXGFFSL1/ SD reader: https://www.amazon.com/Reader-Adapter-Camera-Memory-Wansurs/dp/B0B9QZ4W4Y/
