  2. Perhaps, perhaps not. Personally, I view it as an unambiguously good thing when the government refuses to endorse or fund religious teachings, because official endorsement is only one step closer to state-run religion, which never turns out well for anyone. If this case were a ban on the teachings and rules, yes, I would be concerned there might be a slope. But this is NOT a ban of any type, and the only people who are calling it a ban are those who think that religion is automatically entitled to government endorsement.
  3. "Public" generally means government-owned or government funded. In this case, the school asked for official government endorsement (along with the tax dollars it brings), and they were turned down. The school was not banned from enforcing their rules, they were only told that they could not use tax dollars to promote their message. Since we do not ask for special use of public spaces, seek government endorsement, or spend government dollars, this should have no effect on our preaching activity whatsoever.
  4. The magnetic fields of basalt in the ocean floor have a 'memory' of the earth's magnetic pole throughout the time of the continental drift. And since the magnetic pole takes many hundreds or thousands of years to flip, we can safely rule out any theory of the continents moving at a rate of 50 miles per day during the flood.
  5. In this context, it's a reference to the false and completely unscriptural idea of young earth creationism, the teaching that the earth is 6000 years old and fossils are a hoax to disprove religion. The parts of evolution that we acknowledge as truth are purely on the topics of plant and animal life, the age of humankind isn't really relevant to the discussion.
  6. Plants adapt and mutate constantly, and it's relatively easy for humans to introduce desired changes to a particular line of plants. Unfortunately, this goes against the young-earth anti-science narrative, so it gets ignored in these sorts of discussions.
  7. The question of the origin of life is often lumped in with "evolution", but it's an entirely different field of study. Darwin himself was deliberately silent on the subject, and his writings were purely on the adaptation of existing life forms.
  8. That's for the digital edition, not a hardcopy.
  9. If there's no contractual obligation, then the fines are illegal, and I'm sure the court will sort out the details. If a Witness intentionally applies to a position in a hospital where the job description includes handling blood transfusions or performing abortions, they cannot demand a change of position once they're hired. They knew the requirements going into the position, so they're obligated to carry out the duties they agreed to perform in their signed contract. That's what's happening here, the players apparently signed a contract stating that they would not visibly protest on the field, and they are intentionally using the field as a public platform for their protests. In any case, this is absolutely nothing to do with first-amendment rights, it is purely a contract dispute with a private corporation.
  10. We agree with the clearly observable phenomena that has been termed "microevolution", but we disagree that millions of years of microevolution has a cumulative effect of macroevolution and the creation of entirely new species. https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1102010233
  11. Players did not stand for the anthem at all until the US military paid to have such displays. At that point, standing became part of their contract, and those who publicly refuse to stand are technically in violation. While your point about abortions and blood transfusions is valid, a Witness employee cannot legally refuse those duties if they work at a blood bank or abortion clinic, nor could a Witness claim "neutrality" if they work for a military contractor or political campaign. Since the NFL is now a military contractor, contractually obligated to have visible displays of patriotism, their employees would fall in the same category.
  12. The US first amendment is strictly limited to the government's role in stifling speech. If the NFL, a privately owned corporation, wants to restrict its employees from using their job as a platform for public statements, they are entirely within their rights to do so. Or put in Witness terms, someone working as a cashier has a legally protected right to participate in the field ministry while off the clock, but there would be no legal protection nor moral sympathy if that cashier was fired for handing out tracts while ringing up customers.
  13. I had the same issue with the last update. Clear your browser cache and it should start working again.
  14. If they're removing the word but keeping the teaching, what's the point of the change?
  15. http://cv8.org.uk/soundbox/ Since the the full SoundBox installation is unnecessary with JW Library, the functions have been split between three standalone programs.
  16. 1. Unplug both the HDMI cord and the USB adapter, then reboot. At this point, you should only have the primary display. 2. Plug in the HDMI again, then reboot. 3. Now that both your main display and HDMI displays are working, open JW Library and cast the video to the second monitor. 4. With JW Library still casting to the second monitor, plug in the USB adapter, and reboot again. 5. Open JW Library again and cast the video to the second monitor. This time it should cast to the same display as it did on the previous reboot, leaving your timer monitor unused. If this does not work, I'd recommend sticking with Sound Box and filing a bug report with the branch.
  17. A handful of older ones still are just as aggressive as ever, though these are in the extreme minority today. Regardless of our current approach, the fact remains that we were full fledged "Bible Thumpers" for nearly a century, and that reputation isn't going to disappear overnight.
  18. Here's the definition from Wikipedia: Someone perceived as aggressively imposing their Christian beliefs upon others. The term derives from preachers thumping their hands down on the Bible, or thumping the Bible itself, to emphasize a point during a sermon. While the organization has been discouraging this attitude, the reputation is not entirely unwarranted.
  19. The Israeli government isn't exactly innocent in all this. The border continually moves further into Palestinian land, bulldozing everything and everyone in its way. Moving the embassy is being seen as the US government condoning the continual loss of lives. I'm not saying that violent protests are the answer, but their opposition goes far deeper than a simple difference of opinion about some political stance.
  20. What type of connection is there between the PC and the preamp? If you're just using the PC's audio jack tied directly to a microphone input on the mixer, the lack of proper isolation will definitely cause problems.
  21. With the ethernet cable plugged in, disable the LAN adapter (exact instructions will vary based on your OS), and try playing the audio again. If disabling the ethernet adapter causes the issues to stop, the problem is software/driver related, and if the problem continues it's hardware related, likely a grounding issue.
  22. Cell phones were designed to last 2-3 years at most, and many carriers will insist on a quick replacement cycle, so at any given time you'll always be using one of the most recent generations of technology. Plus, you're only recording one video stream, for minutes at a time, so storage isn't really a concern. Banks don't have that luxury, they install a camera system once to last for decades, and they need enough storage space to store dozens of camera feeds for many months. They already have insurance to cover robberies, so their losses are not dependant on easily identifying a criminal, and insurance companies generally don't offer a greater discount based on the clarity of a security camera. If there's nothing to be gained by a $10,000 upgrade to the cameras and video storage systems, why bother?
  23. If an alternate browser doesn't work, I would go with the $30 Roku Express to use the official JW Broadcasting app, and leave behind the embedded smart TV apps altogether. Smart TVs, especially older ones, rarely receive software updates due to hardware compatibility reasons. When the rest of the internet moves past the capabilities of the old browser, you're stuck with outdated software, and the only answer you'll get from the TV manufacturer is to buy an expensive replacement for an otherwise perfectly functional television.
  24. A lot of people who get rid of cable will switch to mobile data plans. It's fairly cheap to get wifi over cellular, though the connection and costs are virtually always unsuitable for video streaming.
  25. If you're on a desktop, I've had good results with HandBrake converting ~6 hour video files to audio. And if you're on a mobile device or just want a quick conversion, just paste the 240p URL into onlinevideoconverter.com or a similar web-based converter.
