1024px-Flavel_House_%28Astoria%2C_Oregon

The Flavels were a prominent family in Astoria, Oregon early in the 19th century. Harry Flavel was a Ship Captain and he built a huge house on 8th st. This is it. It looks bigger than it really is but it does have 3 stories and a basement. It was probably grand for it's time but it shows a humble lifestyle and, compared with today's excessiveness, is simple and has basic necessities for their everyday lives.

They have tours and it's open for visitors to browse around.

I mention this because of the other Flavel house seen below, this house now belongs to the city, problem of non-payment of taxes. It sat vacant for a really long time. I had walked past this derelict house many times but never knew the history of it. I only now know because there was a story on the radio recently about how Astoria was finally able to purchase the house and get it started with restoration. It is going to be amazing!! Astoria has many of these beauties that have become derelict, some very nice Victorians. Sad really. But nice to see that some have the drive and ability to take on a project like this.

I wonder how many men he shanghaied to serve on his ship?

"Many a farmboy woke up bound for Shanghai with a hangover or a knot on his head. ... Capt. George Flavel played an important role in Astoria's history."

Shanghai was a common problem in it's day. The play "Shanghai'd in Astoria" has been done every year for over 20 years now, it's all about the kidnappings.

Astoria sure has some colorful stories.

This is my favourite picture - it's of my husband and daughter about 7 or 8 weeks ago - My daughter got married (obviously) - I'm a very proud momma - and I think my hubby looks very cute too. The wedding was at a local garden, taken by a dear dear Brother who we call Elder Goody Goody Gumdrops (because when I worked in a Dairy as a pioneer he used to come and buy that flavour ice cream). It was a lovely wedding and they seem very happy. I get to see her and her hubby tonight as they are coming to our one day assembly tomorrow. (I've posted one or two others as well).

This is a picture of where I live. (I'm really just testing my posting photo skills).  It's our paddlesteamer that cruises the river that divides our town in half.

Mandi, we have a Sternwheeler that comes here in the summer. It sells tickets for a dinner cruise and weekend cruise too I think. It goes from here, the mouth of the Columbia River that divides Washington and Oregon to Portland, Oregon, about 100 miles up river. When it's here again I'd love to share a picture of ours, they're beautiful boats aren't they?

Yours is beautiful, I'm glad you posted it.

Yes they are gorgeous - they have restored a tram too that runs past where the steamboat goes. It just add that charm to our river/town.

Now if that isn't ironic, we have a restored Trolley that does the same thing. I'll sit by the Sternwheeler and wait for the Trolley so I can get a pic of them both together!!

Now add this- the boat and trolley are right next to a Maritime Museum in which the roof is designed to look like a wave, cool
