I would actually say "opening a can of worms" - since it is open ..... and even if it does look like a toilet, a toilet is called "the can" as slang in English (American, anyway)

Oh brother, this line of discussion is taking me back. The 'can' reminds me of my childhood. We didn't have indoor plumbing when we moved to a v.e.r.y. primitive "home". We had a 'can' with a toilet seat in a box to use at night when I was 10-12 years old. After that we just used the outhouse because I was old enough to go out by myself. Oh wow, thanks a lot for THAT memory. Oh and the bathtub was a  #3 tub in the kitchen by the wood stove in winter and the creek out back in summer.

Mem..riesss, like the corner of my mind.....oh sorry, I often break out in song when I remember the good old days, err the old days.

"Out Houses" are not a "distant" memory for me .... I work construction sites and a "port-o-let" is nothing more than an outhouse with a "self-contained" holding tank instead of an open hole underneath.

At the same time, I do remember visiting my Dad's family in southern Colorado when I was young. It was in the winter and they had an outhouse. It was a short walk from the back door. Well, if you've ever been in southern Colorado when there is snow, it can get quite deep. So, the first one up in the morning would open the back door, grab the snow shovel and head for "the room", clearing the path for everyone else. It does not take long for the path to become more like a "hallway" with the snow piled high next to the path.

Oh John, that's so right. I do remember that. And the laundry on the clothesline to freeze-dry. And the wringer washer for the laundry to freeze-dry. And no electricity so we used kerosene lamps to light our way to the "gold room" out back......Oh my. Not to mention that when you were finished with the bath you dumped it out the front stoop because it's where the boys went potty at night and we had to rinse it off! UGH!

There are so many people here that say that when Armageddon comes they're coming to live with me, I know how to survive on almost nothing....
