This thread must be busted.  I cannot believe that no one has felt compelled to post a picture, or a comment, since May 7th????

Anyways, even I can't guess what this word picture is supposed to be:

Had to make a trip to Astoria today. Sitting in construction on the bridge looking toward the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the ocean. You're looking at both Oregon and Washington States.

This is #2 of 18 cruise ships that'll visit our town. It's a beautiful day today. Supposed to be raining but so far we've had very little.

It really is a mighty river. Where your photo's are taken the water is calm, fairly. But nearer where we are it's very dangerous.

I think where the Megler bridge is the river is close to 3 miles wide. And it's not very deep in a lot of places either like you'd think it would be. Because of all the dams upriver there's sand bars galore. The ship channel has to be dredged often.

Ok so I went online and found some of my favorite places/pics of Astoria while I was writing this, yes I multi-task too much!

This is at the top of 8th I think. Looks right down toward the shipping channel

This is the house I used to live in when I had my first child, I didn't know it was an historic house.

Here's the megler bridge, where the car is is where I was sitting when I took the pic of the cruise ship yesterday.post-1083-0-87199600-1431462756.jpg

And this one shows why the Coast Guard does it's training here, the bar is one of the worst, actually classified as the worst but I know Newport is just as bad.

Hope that wasn't too many for you folks.

Hi Cheryl, like that bottom picture.

Been there, done that.

In the month of December my sons and I bought a 35 foot sailboat based on the Columbia river .

The five of us would drive down to Ilwaco WA on the weekends to get familiar with boat, equipment and bar conditions.

During that winter we sailed out across the bar numerous times. Bar was flat and peaceful.

Sometimes foggy, but we had radar, mostly it was the good life, warm winter days, sunshine and flat water.

Comes the end of March, as the month is going out like a lamb, it was time to bring the boat home!!.

Had to wait  6 weeks before the Columbia bar was passable for our 35 ft. boat. (Only had weekends to schedule trip.)

First springtime attempt: while still inside the jetty we took a huge swell slightly broadside.

My son 6'4" and 210 pounds, was on the companion way stairs.

Both he and the stairs went thru the door to the head.

Sadly the door to the head was closed at the time. The only way to go below was to climb down thru the forward hatch.

Took a half an hour for the bar to calm down enough to turn around and start back for repairs.

I will never forget a 100 foot ocean going tug that was coming out as we were heading back in, looked just like your picture.

Tug was rolling rail to rail and plunging  bow down into the waves. Very pretty bottom paint.

I wonder what we looked like to him.

Made two more false starts before we were able to get past the Columbia River bar and make a successful June trip to Seattle.

Oh, did I tell you I get violently seasick on a reasonably  calm day. :(  :(

Wow Jerry, that was fantastic! What a story. I'm SO glad I wasn't there, I would have screamed the whole way. Did you sell the sailboat?  :uhhuh:

When I was 11 dad decided we were going salmon fishing and went on a charter boat going out of Warrenton harbor. (I, like you, get motion sick just walking to my truck in the morning). Sooo, we bounced  :bouncing:  across the bar out to the ocean and I started throwing up. Stayed out for what seemed like hours, vomited all the way. Drove home, to Jewell- and if you know where that is you'll understand it did nothing for my stomach. I threw up for a solid week, just as I was getting ready for the hospital it stopped. Will never eat raspberry filled cookies again as long as I live!

MH used to do drag fishing. When he came ashore we spent as much time as we could together so once I tried to go with him when he went to fuel the boat, The Western. Floating over to the fuel dock I got sick. Sheesh, he was so mad! So much for that idea.

I did go sturgeon fishing in the Columbia 2 years ago and did get queasy as the afternoon wind started. Found I felt better if I sat down and swayed with the boat instead of standing and countering the swells. But I think I'll fish on the bank or on a bridge. I plan to do some fishing this year, the bass are everywhere. I wanted to go cat fishing but because of the KH build I wasn't able to. So bass in the lake by my house and sturgeon on the Naselle will be open later.
