Coffee Or Smoothie? Which is better?

Recommended Posts

I read this article before I seen it here, and wasn't surprised at the results.  Was pleasantly surprised at the sample sizes used, but did also wonder as the author stated whether or not there were other factors that played a role.

That being said, fruit juices are bad news to a diet.  You're better off eating a whole fruit, than buying a fruit juice!  The only juice I drink is cranberry juice, and it's unsweetened.

We get a little colder than you, but not much ... I'm only 300 or so miles north of you - near Gainesville

I'm about than 1:45 northeast of Deland ... however, I will most likely be in Deland next Sunday for about 20-25 minutes.

I will be in Deland next week, but not sure of the days. That's where my son has been living and I usually stay at a sisters home when I go there. She is in Deland. My son is in Daytona in the hospital and I need to take care of some paper work with him, if he is able to respond to me. I think I will be gone by Sunday though.

I will be in Spring Hill at an RBC project. Should finish up Saturday. Then, early Sunday morning I will continue to Tampa where I will pick up 10,000 papers that I deliver. My first stops are in Deland and I plan on doing that portion of my route on the way home - thus the reason I Will only be in Deland for about 25 minutes .... then I will continue up US17 North to Palatka before going East to St Augustine.

I have been making the salted caramel latte or frappicinno at home and they are so much better that at the coffee shops.  I just place a couple of cups of sugar in a dry, heavy bottomed pan and stir it over medium heat until it melts turning a dark amber. then add one stick of butter--be careful when stirring because the steam is scalding!  After that I stir in heavy whipping cream to finish the homemade caramel sauce.  Brew a strong cup of coffee (Kuerig or French press) and add 2 T of the caramel sauce with 2 T of chocolate syrup.  Froth some milk and add to the hot beverage.  Add whipping cream on top and pour another 1 or 2 spoons of caramel sauce and top with coarse sea salt that has been missed with equals parts of the large crystal sugar.  I like this blended in the blender with ice for a frappacinno.  So good.

Leslie, that sounded good till I got to the part of the instructions that said "Brew a strong cup of coffee" .... I do NOT like coffee  (td)  never have, never will    :shrugs:

That is why I vote for Hot Cocoa/Chocolate

Your right. Fruit juice is one of the worst things you can drink. They are high in sugar, with no fibre, and much of the antioxidants have been lost due to the processing of it.

However if you do your own home made smoothies and consume all the bits/pulp, you are consuming the fibre and antioxidants contained in the fruit, so the health benefits are the same as if you had eaten the fruit. It is just good to have these things in moderation though. Plus if you are not an active person then the sugar goes to building fat cells which is not what people generally want.

Its good to know there is a study out there that says caffeine in moderation is okay and can even have health benefits. The trick to all these things is moderation and trying to stay as active as possible. Tea, Coffee, Fruits, (smoothified or as they are) are good for you. Combine this with as much ministry as possible and these things can be part of a healthy, active, fulfilling lifestyle.

Micah 4:5 ......"we, for our part, shall walk in the name of Jehovah our God to time indefinite, even forever."

John 15:13 "No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his life in behalf of his friends."

Yes, apparently caffeine is thought to act as a protective mechanism for the heart.  Also interesting though, another study shows that caffeine causes the placenta to break away early from the uterine wall.  (Not really an issue for you I'd expect :P)

I have learned that in science, for every article that says 'Yay go ahead and do this/eat this' there are 75 that say otherwise and the information is only as good as the researcher, and your interpretation (which can in some cases be minimal, especially when they start getting into all the medical jargon).

We rip articles/papers apart where I work, and we challenge the research because sadly there are journals that will accept absolute malarky.  There was an article about this recently, and the results were very scary in the sense that blatant errors were made, calculations didn't add up, and yet these articles were accepted to well respected journals!

I do enjoy a homemade smoothie though, they never make them with as many icecubes as I like LOL!  When we lived on an acreage, I would pick raspberries, soak them in water overnight (worms/spiders die and float to the top) and then make smoothies with these fruits.

There is a food chain here in Alberta called Booster Juice, and I loved their smoothies until I discovered a 24 oz. drink contained 500+ calories.  You can't tell me that all those calories are from the fruits alone.  Then they would also add boosters (echinecea, bee pollen, acai etc) which added yet another 100 calories.  Their menus are sneaky too, as they tell you in the 'fine print' as it were that the boosters are additional calories.

Interestingly enough, frozen fruits are just about as nutrient rich as those that are fresh, as they are frozen at the height of their nutrient value.

Activity while important isn't the key deciding factor for weight loss/maintenance though.  If you think about it, most of our meals range from 400-1200 in caloric value.  This means you can sit down and eat these amounts in less than 20 minutes, yet the activity required to burn them off is 4-6 hours!!!  It's easier to modify what you eat and drink, as opposed to being confined to a treadmill for 12 of the 24 hours a day :P

Weight training seems to be most beneficial, but again, you have to find that balance between catabolic and anabolic functions (where fat is broken down, and muscle is built).

I have done my own little studies (using myself as a guinea pig), where I ate trashy foods, along with healthy, but had an extremely high activity level.  Meaning I was playing hockey 3x per week, belly dancing as well as doing kung fu.  Now, interestingly enough, my 'size' changed, in that I went from a 15 to a 12 in less than a month - but my overall weight didn't change a bit because I was still eating anywhere from 1800-2400 calories per day.

This could be due to a couple of things, first I had reached that magical state of exchanging fat for muscle (doubtful), and while the ministry keeps me spiritually healthy, and definitely plays a role in helping me to control my stress levels, the amount of actual walking we do here isn't worth a lick of exercise.

You'd have to go out and walk (not walk from KH to car, drive to territory, then get out a few times).  You'd have to walk to your territory, do all the houses, and you'd have to do it at a brisk pace (running would be best LOL...but perhaps a bad witness ;))

How do you fit your exercise in with all that we do?  I am still playing hockey, but I just don't play on meeting nights, as a goalie I don't interact a lot with the rest of the team (I'm not on the bench with them), and in the dressing room, I'm pretty much in and out.
