Don't know where California City, CA is but LA was certainly good to us for many years!  Very expensive to live there.  But my husband got sober there and built up his own company which had a good deal of recognition and afforded us a very good living for a time.  Then ill health and had to leave.  So many fond memories there.  Plus it i where I learned the Truth!

That is located next to Edwards Air Force base about half way between Bakersfield and Barstow.

I've driven through that area a few times. hot hot hot.

Barstow. Isn't that the area that became seaside territory in movie "10.5"?

My wife's sister lives near Perris, CA and I saw temps for Barstow when out there one Sept.

It was 10 degrees hotter there than Perris-Sun City area.

well what most people dont now is that the LA and its surroundings is dessert  it part of death Valley

that why it hotter then the rest of CAlif

I am near perris myself, yep very hot in summer can get to 110

Ok i probably should have been more specific. I know the logistics. What i dont know are the friends, territory, etc. Hot is 98 deg with 95 % humidity...thats hot!

What I wish is that we could move to Oxnard, CA  BUT it's wayyyy to expensive.

 

Just need to be somewhere that's affordable in a drier climate.  Humidity is horrible here (South Louisiana/Mississippi), makes it feel so hot that you can't breathe.  There are only a couple of months of really good weather and it's always raining.   

 

So, back to my original question.....what is the service territory like and what kind of personality does the congregation have....I am finding in our travels that each congregation is different.

 

We tried calling the Kingdom Hall a few times and left a message, but no one called us back. 

We will be driving to California in August and just wanted an idea of what to expect.

I would suggest that you pass California City, continue until you hit Freeway 5, go north until the thermometer reaches a point you are comfortable with and then stop and stay.

 

If you decide to stay in California City, don't forget to move your car every hour to keep the tires from melting on just one side.

S. Calif

the bay area is really nice to live 

in the summer it stay about 70s exep for 2 weeks then it can get really hot 

but we do have the fog that move in at night 

winters are nice to

Is it burning in Kelowna, BC? There is sooo much smoke from BC through Manitoba fires that it is hazing our skies in southern Ontario.

I heard Fresno, CA is nice. My wife knows the area a bit. It is supposed to be the breadbasket area.

 

Traveling across country, I would take hwy 20 to Dallas, the north on hwy 35 to hwy 40 west.

 

There is a fairly nice Red Roof inn at Amarillo, TX, new wood floors, dated bathroom, but fairly cheap.

Get a Hotel coupon book for Each State or collection of states, it can save you a lot. Check out places in coupon book - online.

 

Try another stop near Gallup, NM ( eggs were a buck a dozen at WallyMart ) or Holbrook, AZ ( 6000 feet ).  Don't forget to visit the "spaceship Landing site" just 25 north off hwy 40 at Winslow ( I never did ).

At Holbook there is a nice little restaurant next to a cheap motor inn ( Best Little American Motel ? ). Restaurant serves really good simple meals and is reasonable, hotel ,ehh - it was cheap, with breakfast at restaurant thrown in.

 

You will pass through Flagstaff, AZ ( 7300 feet ) - oh and bye the way Fill up your gas tank Before crossing into California, and Eat Your Fruits beforehand, they will confiscate them at CA border.

 

At Barstow go towards Bakersfield  on 58 ( not a major highway in this area, according to map, we went south here on 15 but we were going through Victorville ), Bypass California City.

Go north on hwy 99 to Fresno area. There are lots of smaller communities near Fresno, which should be cheaper to live, and fresh veggies/fruits plentiful.

 

Map out your route carefully and do a Google map drive and street view of stops, etc., before you leave.

 

Have a Good GPS!!! and a Good camera. Going across the desert can be very beautiful - but long straight roads.

Good question Leslie!... we have never been, but don't really care so much for SNOW!  but I guess you never know!

Avoid Hwy 10 in California for next little while. Although fine when we came back across in March, a bridge which passed inspection March 17th was Washed away last Sunday July 19th. There's your water, Californiaaa's it's washing things away.
