Brother Glenn, that's so interesting that you bring that out because for a while there was discussions on here about the UN not having military power but I also have someone in my family who is UN security officer and he was sent over to Haiti and stayed there for a long. I kept saying that the UN does have force and are able to take action. But many did not agree.

There was a book called "The Fearful Master" and talked about the UN did during the cold war. http://www.amazon.com/Fearful-Master-Second-United-Nations/dp/0882791028

And it is on PDF file too: http://www.pdfarchive.info/pdf/G/Gr/Griffin_G_Edward_-_The_fearful_master_A_second_look_at_the_United_Nations.pdf

Why does the UN not have a standing reserve?
It takes considerable time to deploy troops and we are often asked why we do not have a standing reserve.

The UN can only deploy military personnel when there is a UN Security Council resolution authorizing them to do so. The Security Council will say how many military personnel are required, and then UN Headquarters will liaise with the Member States to identify personnel and deploy them. This can take time – perhaps more than six months from the date of the resolution.

As former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said, the UN is “the only fire brigade in the world that has to wait for the fire to break out before it can acquire a fire engine.” A standing reserve sounds logical, but it would be immensely costly to have a force of several thousand people on permanent standby. It would require training, accommodating, feeding, etc. and then might not even be used. Although it takes time, it is much more practical to generate the military personnel once the go-ahead has been given. This also ensures we recruit personnel with the appropriate background, training and language skills.

On their own, the UN is toothless, as they openly admit. The UN can only gain military power when other nations "give their power and authority" to them. (Revelation 17:13)

What that post omit is that The UN Peace Keepers can go on an OFFENSE in order to pursue their purposes. What their purposes are, God only knows. Operation Morthor is a perfect example.

Bad decision making on the part of a few individuals in no way implies that the UN has unilateral control over a powerful military that they can mobilize at a moment's notice.

Scripturally, the UN does not have power until it is given by the kings of the earth. The UN openly admits that this is true. So with both the UN and the Scriptures speaking in complete agreement on this detail, why is there any debate?

They wouldn't be called the United Nations if that was not what they were...they have power by calling nations to act on their treaties through them. Those treaties are their power...the nations are giving them their power by supporting these treaties between nations and they regulate and cause actions to take place against those who break them as the peace keepers and that's what the scripture is talking about. The problem is they will fail because Jehovah is the only one that can handle the world of course.

And this takes place by means of resolutions and negotiations, which the UN says can take up to six months.

As a military power, the UN is virtually nonexistent. They can get the power as needed, but they simply do not have the unilateral and instantaneous response capability that virtually every other country has.

“6 Who or what will carry out the attack against “Babylon the Great”? A “wild beast” with “ten horns.” The book of Revelation indicates that this wild beast refers to the United Nations (UN). The ten horns represent all present political powers that support this “scarlet-colored wild beast.” (Rev. 17:3, 5, 11, 12) How devastating will the attack be? The nations of the UN will plunder the prostitute’s wealth, devour her, and “completely burn her.”—Read Revelation 17:16.*”

That is all the power the UN is described as ever having according to God's Kingdom Rules book.

The Bible says that the kings "give" their power to the UN.

The UN itself says that they only have power as it is given by the nations.

So where is this idea coming from that the UN has unilateral command over any sort of major military power? Yes, they have a handful of troops, but their total military power in any given country is smaller than some American police departments, and I'm pretty sure that the New York Police Department would not be able to singlehandedly take down any mainstream religion.

Having sought to prohibit the individual use of force by states in this way, the drafters of the Charter put in place a system of collective enforcement that was designed to ensure that states did not need to resort to force except in extreme circumstances of self-defense. The collective enforcement system, which is provided for primarily in Chapter VII of the Charter, envisages a central role for the United Nations Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security. It provides in Article 39 that the Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression. Having made this determination the Security Council can provide for measures not involving the use of force to be undertaken against a breaching state. Such measures may include the disruption of economic relations, most usually by the imposition of economic sanctions, and the severance of diplomatic relations (UN Charter, Article 41). Finally the Security Council may authorize such use of force as may be necessary in order to restore international peace and security (UN Charter, Article 42).

This is their teeth, they are the force and law behind any nations taking any military action, so they are the power giving them them the right to fight or not. These treaties/charters are what causes them to have the power or teeth spoken of, and to further show this the publications no longer say anything about looking for them to "obtain" their power but instead they look for the actions they do now. Look at the timeline on any of our current magazines or books and no longer timeline marker for this to happen in the future or for us to look for because they have the system set up already. All we are waiting for now is for the cry or cries of peace and security and then the ( maybe simultaneous ) attack on religion by the nation's political powers which of course will be done through the demands of the UN.

This was posted on another thread but it is applicable to the discussion. This is the official charter the UN has set forth to fight the religious extremist groups. It is a recent agreement made on November 20th so last week. This is interesting terminology because they mention stopping the ideology (beliefs) of a religious extremist group...how will they get involved in finding a legally acceptable teaching of a religion if they are not getting involved in religions? Things are moving quickly now!!!

Sister Brigette, did he explain his reasoning on that? Just wondering.

No, he just felt that ISIS would probably consider it quite a coo to hit the UN.  I think he was referring to the general assembly in New York where all heads of countries/states meet.

Don't live for the moment - live for the future! :D

Please don't try to take away his being "right"... The UN was attacked.

I was trying to take it away, just explaining why he said what he said.  He figures, what better way to get the UN to give itself the "teeth" it needs than to have an attack on it - that would get the job done real quick!

Don't live for the moment - live for the future! :D
