A runner who survived an attack by a mountain lion has said he wrestled the animal to the ground and jammed his foot onto its neck to suffocate it.

Travis Kauffman says the lion "locked its jaws on his wrist" and was "clawing his face and arms" during the attack in Colorado on February 4.

The ordeal left him with 28 stitches and a reputation for toughness and bravery that overshadows his wiry frame.

Talk about a modern Samson!

Personally I don’t buy his story. Do I have a better one ? Nope.

Looks like they found a body... Kauffman was then able to extract his wrist from the mouth of the dead cat, which wildlife officers said was young and weighed about fifty pounds.

This story has been dominating the airwaves lately. After hearing all sides I think there is more to this tail. From listening to his girlfriend speak I have a suspicion he went looking for this kitty. I wouldn’t. But then fame isn’t worth loosing an arm in my opinion.

I do not believe the story either, I want to see the body of the deceased (sorry for being morbid).

This so-called mountain lion must have been either very docile or very sickly. The muscle mass alone would be impossible to get a good whole of the lion around its neck, and even if he was able to get his hands around its neck, what was the poor things doing with all it 4 claws?

Just my  IMHO .

I read someone lace the cat was about eighty lbs. which would make it a subadult. Or young adult. Still even a 35 lb Bobcat can. Kill an adult deer. From the wounds and description of the Jogger he just happened to do exactly the right things that saved his life. Got an arm up just enough to keep the lion from getting a full bite on his head/neck , jammed his arm into the cats mouth and threw his body weight onto its neck. This probably could not be successfully done with a fully mature cat. 👀 forward to the time when such beasts will neither fear mankind more see us as a potential meal.

I doubt he truly “ went looking” but rather in cat land it is always prudent to “ look” . I’ve seen 4 Florida Panthers , they always saw me first , I wasn’t looking for them and couldn’t have enticed them to within reach even if I slathered myself with bacon. But when one of these big cats  makes the rare mistake of attacking a man   It rarely turns out good. They are elusive to the max when they want to be .

I don’t think he set out that day to attack a cat.  But upon stumbling upon a baby lion he decided to harass it and got the pointy end of the stick.

Depends : on which report is correct. Was the cat 50 lbs or 80lbs. One is a large cub the other an inexperienced hunter.

The official report simply refers to it as a juvenile. No size given. But was accompanied by this image.

I would judge that cat at 60 lbs. capable of outrunning a man, ineffectively taking a deer ( it would get a few but not be experienced). It would be very difficult to get close enough to such an animal to taint it . But such an animal out of inexperience could attempt an attack on a human. It’s rare but it happens. Obviously that isn’t the actual cat. At the age in the photo momma is probably not far away but in a few months a mature male will probably drive it off.
