Active shooting at Gilroy Garlic Festival with reports of multiple casualties

Police are responding to reports of an active shooting at the famed Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California, leaving an unknown number of casualties and sending terrified visitors running for their lives.

Authorities said the scene was still active, with dozens of officers from around the region on the scene. President Trump said on Twitter that “reports are that shooter has not yet been apprehended. Be careful and safe!”

Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds fired and that some people were down on the ground. Others said the gunman was armed with a rifle and was dressed in some kind of vest and camouflage fatigues.

Officials reported that three air ambulances were sent to the scene. A medical center in San Jose said it was receiving at least five patients.

We use to go to the garlic festival, the garlic ice cream was actually pretty good. We stopped going because there was some gang activity reported. That was many years ago....

CBSN TV News is reporting that police have confirmed fifteen people shot...three fatalities.

Eye witnesses say they heard two bursts of gunfire, each burst firing off 30 rounds of bullets.

As usual, the first reports are somewhat mixed up.

 

I heard one eyewitness say the shooter was using an Kalashnikov rifle and it jammed, then the shooter replaced the empty magazine and resumed fire.

 

A later report says that Gilroy Police officers at the festival engaged the shooter in less than a minute, killing him.

Police suspect there was a second person involved in the shooting, it is unknown what role this second person may have had.

 

So far there are 4 dead, that includes the shooter. In addition, 12 others were injured, not all injuries were gunshot wounds, of the ones shot there are 3 that are critically wounded..

They have a mass shooting almost every weekend in Chicago.

In Chicago, 1,465 people have been shot this year. That is 101 fewer than 2018.

Sounds like they are on track to meet their record .

Just for context: A mass shooting is defined as any shooting in which three or more individuals are killed which may or may not include the shooter.  

    It is probable that a lot more mass shootings are simply stopped from meeting that definition by persons able to stop the shooter after the first victim is shot. Or because the shooter, in that moment, chooses to take their own life.

    The increased incidence of mass shootings has generally followed the increase in the percentage of persons self reporting as being spiritually inactive or even Atheist.
