I'm speaking of people who really are struggling with health problems that the government doesn't qualify them as unable to work, or work long enough to gain access to enough money to meeting their needs.

Charlotte, I understand your concern and it's completely justified. It's really sad that many people are struggling with poverty, including some of our brothers and sisters. Many families depend on food stamps to survive.

Yet the article you quoted explains the American government is considering tightening the rules for adults without children between 18 and 49 years old who are in condition to work but are not looking for a job. It especifically mentions that families with children won't be affected, the same as people older than 50. Of course no human government can do things perfectly but it seems like a reasonable measure to me. When a culture of social help develops and generation after generation of people live on social subsidies rather than finding a job that becomes a huge burden for the society, and very unfair too.

Now compare that with Jehovah's Law. Israelites had to leave a part of their fields unharvested, so that the poor could go there and glean some cereal for a living. That way the poor did receive help but they had to work for it.

We really need the kingdom where no one will ever struggle with poverty again.

I have seen several comments made here which confuse me.  Especially in light of two scriptural Principles. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 and Matthew 25:35?

The real questions to be asked are : Is it right to claim bread from the hand of your fellow man if you obviously can work?  And when has a servant of Jehovah in your presence ever been hungry homeless or impoverished and not had their need supplied? ( Jehovah Jireh indeed ).

If you qualify for Gov't assistance ... the Organization has said more than once that there is nothing wrong in accepting that assistance.

Since my taxes have paid some of the money into such programs - why would it be wrong for me to collect some of my own money back if I qualify. It doesn't seem to be any different than accepting your IRS refund if you are due one.

We have also had direction that helping our fellow brother/sister with their needs may include helping them to fill out any needed paperwork for Gov't programs they may qualify for.

Yes a good answer. And let me add : Isn’t that also Jehovah providing ?    But really at your age and mine if we accept Government assistance it is often really just us paying ourselves ( we payed in for decades).  That is very different from the 19-49 year old single males that are being required to work 20 hours a week to qualify.
