Uranus was almost named George. The astronomer that first discovered the planet was English. He wanted to name it after King George, But it definitely never would have fit in with the going theme. . .

German astronomer Johann Bode proposed Uranus to match the mythological theme of other planets (the Greek god of the sky)

Johann Bode

He strongly promoted what became known as the Titius-Bode law, a mathematical pattern that seemed to predict the spacing of planets from the Sun. According to the pattern, there should have been a planet between Mars and Jupiter. Astronomers began searching for it — and in 1801 they discovered Ceres, the first known asteroid in the asteroid belt.
