Good hearing...

Recommended Posts

Why do some people have really good hearing?

My wife will wake up in the middle of the night because she heard a spider walking on the wall. Maybe it coughed, I don't know.

Today she was complaining that a lizard in the back yard was making too much noise walking through the grass.

I am hard of hearing so I am blissfully oblivious to the noise of spiders, lizards and stray cats 3 blocks away.

Do some people really hear that well?

My wife is always annoyed by the constant noise our neighbors make and yet I can't hear anything. She often says: "Hear, they have that reggaeton music at full volume again" or "Hear, she's been walking all around the house on her highheels all day". I pretend I hear it and play along with her but the truth is I don't hear a thing.

Similarly, she often mishears when people speak or when we watch tv. Yet she can hear perfectly if I bite my nails or scratch my itching arm even if I am in the opposite corner of the room! :shrugs:

Does your child only seem to listen when they hear words they like, such as ice cream? Selective hearing refers to when a person appears to only hear what is important to them. It has nothing to do with hearing acuity; it happens due to the way the brain prioritizes sounds. In children, when too many sound sources bombard the brain, the brain reacts by “tuning out” what seems less important. Men are often the classic example of selective hearing, but women are guilty as well.

Now I know why my husband always doesn't hear a word I say. 😂 Even if I have it all written down, he will still get the message all tangled up. ☹️

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Relationship Advice: ‘It Helps To Be A Little Deaf’

RBG added that she applies this relationship advice not only to her marriage, but also to life.

“I have followed that advice assiduously, and not only at home through 56 years of a marital partnership nonpareil. I have employed it as well in every workplace, including the Supreme Court,” she said. “When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade.”

Selective hearing at It's best! LOL

Daydream -

Scientists have discovered that daydreaming is an important tool for creativity. It causes a rush of activity in a circuit, which connects different parts of the brain and allows the mind to make new associations.

I'm not sure what this thread is about - my eyesight is not all that much better than my hearing ...

It seems that old Ruth ignored a lot of sound by sleeping while on duty!

I believe women generally have better hearing and are more easily distracted by background noise. I believe it's one of the many ways female brains and bodies are primed for giving care to babies. A mom or caregiver, in general, would want to hear every cry, whimper or gurgle from her baby even if the baby is in another room in case anything might be wrong.

You may be right. I've noticed that my hearing is worse since I've been married, I'm not sure if there is a correlation...😁

It can also be tonal

i can deeper tones easily, but not so with higher tones

in pother words I can hear my son better - even at lower volume than my daughter

her voice is higher and these are often the. First tones we begin to lose with age

i also have no problem hearing the TV/computer.......unless someone is talking in the background @ my house

then I need to turn it up significantly to hear the TV - the voices - even soft - seriously mess with my hearing

  • 1 year later...

My wife has been telling me for awhile that she hears a rhythmic noise in the back room. I can't hear it so we assumed it was one of the computers or the wifi gateway fan. This evening we figured out she can hear the electric meter running. The circuit breaker panel is located on the outside of one of the back room walls...

Actually, there is a function in a man's brain which activated when the fourth finger is somewhat constricted by pressure surrounding which triggers selective deafness.
