No, I meant string. In those days when you went to the meat market they wrapped up your package and tied it with string. The butcher had a big roll right beside the paper to wrap the meat in. She untied the package and used the string as part of his sandwich.

[/quote'] Thanks for the clarification Vernalee. When one thinks about it, even in this century, some meats (ham and beef roast) are still wraped in string but tape has replaced the string in packaging.
