Starting from around 5 p.m. local time in the afternoon, the strombolian activity, which had been going on for the past weeks from the New SE crater intensified significantly. Shortly after, a lava overflow was observed from the eastern side of the South East crater. At 16:05 UTC (5:05 p.m. local time), a part of the eastern flank of the cone collapsed into a pyroclastic flow that traveled down the western wall of the Valle del Bove depression.

The flow, as hot material was sliding over snow, produced an ash and steam cloud that quickly dispersed from high altitude winds to the south.
5 minutes later, the explosive activity at the SE crater increased further into lava fountains several hundred meters high, which produced a tall ash plume that rose to up to approx. 10 km elevation (30,000 ft) above sea level, i.e. 7 km above the craters.

The eruption was accompanied, as usual, by a sharp increase in tremor reflecting the sudden high discharge rate of magma being pushed to the surface by expanding gasses in a jet similar to opening a pressurized champagne bottle.

Etna explodes for a second time in less than 48 hours.

 

Also, Taal volcano, in the Philippines, is causing more evacuations again.

Ongoing elevated seismic activity under the volcano sparked fears that the volcano, which had a massive, devastating eruption little more than a year ago, in January 2020, might erupt again in the near future. 

 

It prompted authorities to evacuate residents from Volcano Island, located within the crater lake of Taal volcano in the Province of Batangas, Philippines.

Volcano Island is within the designated Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) of the Taal Volcano due to its location within the crater lake. 

 

The evacuations affected the remaining small villages located on the shores of the island, as they are only a few kilometer distance from the active crater lake in the center of the island away.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has recorded more than 300 volcanic tremor episodes since Feb. 15, 2021. GPS data and satellite-based radar analysis show that the volcano continues a slow trend of inflation.

 

These observations indicate that magma is accumulating inside its reservoirs.

I sent a message of concern to my Uncle and Aunt living on the slopes there. Her response? 

Hi Lucia Etna has been making these eruptions for a few days.  She threw a lot of ash and small stones but towards the Acireale area and towards the airport so much so that the planes did not land or even take off.  But now they are in operation, however, Etna always does her own caprices. Until now there is no danger for us.

Earthquakes occuring in Iceland:

There have been a total of ten...so far.

 

 

This 5.7 struck less than a mile down.

Six earthquakes registering 5.0+ already this morning.

There have been eight 5.0+ quakes so far today and one of them hit on land up in Alaska, just north of Anchorage.

A near 6.0 just hit on land in Greece and just six miles down.

So there may be considerable damage.

 

 

The first aftershock just hit. It was also just six miles down.

Reuters is reporting the quake's magnitude at 6.2

There have been a LOT of large aftershocks to that 6.2 in Greece.

 

I am beginning to think that either that 6.2 was really a much larger quake than was reported...

Or, that all these big quakes are leading up to an even BIGGER quake.

 

Perhaps even that 8.0 that Michael Janitch/Dutchsinse has been warning us about? 🤔

Did he say that for Greece? Wow! I haven’t watched the latest. Thanks for the update. It’s not near where my family is from, but I imagine there’s many towns and villages there. Sad 😞

There was a 3.1 about 539km away from Perth near the goldfields at Kalgoorlie just a little while ago.

It’s not a big deal. But it’s not usual for us to get quakes. It is in a mining area though.

He did not give an exact location for where the 8.0 could strike.  He just said that seismic conditions were ripe for a quake of that magnitude, so he was expecting an 8.0 to pop up somewhere on the planet.🤔

There have been thirty-three 4.0+

quakes so far today, and this 7.4 just hit in the New Zealand region.  Good thing it wasn't nearer to the surface.

😯 Oh wow. We've been wanting to fly there again, and hoping sometime in the near future to go, but had no idea about the high quake activity.
