One thing our department really looks forward to every year, is going to the local schools to talk to the kids about fire prevention.

This is Fire Prevention Week and the theme for this year is, replace your smoke alarms every ten years.  Seems the sensors wear out

and smoke alarms don't work as well, after ten years from their manufactured date.

We go through the classrooms of Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and grades 1 -5, talking to them about STOP! DROP! AND ROLL!

The dangers of 'playing' with cigarette lighters, candles and matches, and staying a safe distance  away from campfires.  Getting out of

the house as quickly as possible when the smoke alarm goes off and having a place where the whole family can meet outside.

We don our full PPE in front of the kids and go 'on air', so they can see what firefighters look like, and hear what we sound like, so they won't be scared and hide from us if we have to go in and get them out of a fire.

(Cats and kids try to hide from danger, so we find them under beds and in closets.  Dogs and adults flee from danger, so we find them near doors and windows.)

The classroom part ends with a question and answer period.   We  really have to struggle to not burst out laughing at some of the things the kids say.  Art Linkletter was right.  Kids sure do say the darnedest things.YES Grinning.gif

After the Q&A session, we take the kids outside and let them spray the fire hoses.  It is their most favorite part of our yearly visits.

It took us over five hours to cover all the classrooms and we went through 9,000 gallons of water.  But it was well worth while and it made us smile.YES Grin.GIF   Oh...and we got a free school lunch out of the deal.  Some delicious fried chicken, fresh green beans, watermelon slices and chocolate milk.^_^

What were some of the funny things the kids said?

The most unforgettable was, a little first-grader.  He said that they had a fire at his house once, and his dog blew up.  We are hoping it was an inflatable doggy.:D

We had six inch and a half's out. The lowest we could safely operate the pump at was 70psi.  But we were handling all the back pressure, or kids would have been getting whipped off their tiny little feet, left and right.

The kids did control the spray type, direction and flow, though.  One kid asked us if he could spray his friends.  Eleven alarmed  "NO!!!" s:o immediately resounded.:D Also, a lilltle lecture on why fire hoses are sometimes used for crowd control.^_^

Fire isn't the only thing rushing water wipes out.
