With regards to Leonardo, I think it was his genius that makes him stand out from other renaissance painters.  His combination of many disciplines and deeply inquisitive nature meant that more than other contemporaries, he poured out his creative inclinations more widely.  Whatever he turned his mind to, it was more or less successful, and in a spectacular way.  Very few geniuses over history had such a wide range of abilities, as most specialise and you can see that in one particular field, such as painting (ie, most of the other Renaissance artists did not delve past painting/sculpture, and thus they were more prolific in their output).

 

In his day, Leonardo was in demand for more than just his painting and sculpture.  His engineering skills and foresight was sought by the likes of Cesare Borgia.  This is an interesting article on the war machines he developed (invention and improvement on design, both offensive and defensive).  Others have been able to use these proto-types to make the modern machines we have now.  Note: he apparently detested this sort of inventing for carnage, and had put in "flaws" in his designs so unscrupulous individuals would not be able to replicate. (Seems an interesting thought, but that might explain why some didn't word).

Yes, male/female wasn’t the same as today. Jesus was depicted as a renaissance man. Did you know that Da Vinci never finished his famous Last Supper painting? He was never happy with Jesus’ face and kept erasing it and repainting it until he essentially gave up.

It's true. Men in Leonardo's paintings use to look quite androgynous. That's certainly not the Jesus I visualize.
