Watchtower Library went "Kaboom"

Recommended Posts

I need some techno help.

I was translating the 36textes from French to English

when my Desktop JWLibrary said an update was available.

I clicked on the update and my JWLibrary went "Kaboom".

Couldn't get it back, either.

Every time I tried to access it, this message came up:

Kaboom.jpg.gif.8348ff8b61bb48a8a301af47869b2bf2.gif

After a dozen attempts to open my JWLibrary and

getting the above message, I tried rebooting my

computer.

Nope!

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the JWLibrary.

Spent almost an hour waiting for all the updates

to download, only to say yes, install updates,

and then have the above message return. :(

Any ideas on how I can get my computer to locate

the entry point?

I am lost without my JWLibrary. :(

That's really strange because "InetPtonW" or rather "InetP_tonw" is used by IPV (IP address protocol) It shouldn't affect the WTLibrary at all.

By the way, when you say "Desktop JWLibrary" you mean the WT Library which you installed via the CD ROM, right?

WTLibrary or JWLibrary?

Does it make a difference which one you are talking about?

It's the Watchtower Library that loads from a CD.

I thought so.  What has happened is Watchtower Library just downloaded the 2017 update and installed.  This new update includes a new program which doesn't work with XP.  Watchtower Library hasn't officially been supported on Windows XP since the 2015 edition, and now the new code won't work at all.

Copying the old WTLibrary.exe over to Program Files\Watchtower folder could work

Or make a hybrid setup which contains the old program with the new data.

Give me a moment and I'll upload the old program for download.

Wow!  Thanks for the idea.   I'm gonna try it now. ^_^

Doing this got me my Watchtower Library back.

Just can't install the updates.

Every time I try to install the updates, I get this message:

Kaboom.jpg.gif.fe1554a6bb34771b09e708f11f5aab23.gif

Here is what my Watchtower Library folder contains:

5a3daa5d2cf0b_WatchtowerLibraryFolderContents.jpg.gif.516a032b82efa0db5661dbaed9259eac.gif

When I put the new wtlibrary icon in, this appears

when I clicked on WTLibrary:

5a3daa846d1b5_SecurityWarning.jpg.gif.89dcf2e0e0f9ef1176e350352ca90e0c.gif

I click Run and this appears:

5a3dab1e38ad9_RunAs.jpg.gif.7d4b27f32085219ca33bf6dc5f4b6753.gif

I unclick the Protect my computer, because the

updates won't update with that on.

After I click ok, this appears:

5a3dabf4dd81c_UpdatePackage.jpg.gif.7d7dc814a567bbf6f5ca5c3fb8a441c2.gif

If I click Yes, WTLibrary goes Kaboom.

If I click No, I get my Library, but with no updates,

because I reinstalled the CD to see if that would

fix the Kaboom message.

All of the other times I have clicked Yes on the

updates, I had no problem what-so-ever.

But at least, thanks to Brother Jonathan's idea,

I have my 2016 WT Library back up and working. :D

Wish I could have received a warning.  I wouldn't have clicked 'Yes' on the fatal update. :(

You can't update previous updates.  So all my 2017 stuff is gone, and I have to RUN the program

each time I want to use it now.:(

It would have been nice if you had gotten a warning that your OS was not compatible when the update was d/l ... I guess they are not having the app check the OS before the update is applied.

However, there have been more than one announcements that the new WTL is NOT compatible with prior versions of Windows - I guess they thought that was warning enough.

I didn't even bother ordering the CD, because I heeded that initial warning.

Then the Brother in charge of the Literature Counter handed me a CD and said that it was working just fine on XP computers.

And it was working just fine on my XP...until a few hours ago.

Well, there is one thing you can be happy about .....

You have helped the rest of us know how far the "backwards compatibility" goes .... seems we have reached the limit with XP :shrugs:

There is a way to recover the 2017 publications, using the offline update feature. When the updates are downloaded, they download to the following folder. (replace <USERNAME> with the username for your PC)

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Local\Watchtower\wtlibrary\E\WTE\Updates

Windows 7/8/10: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Watchtower\wtlibrary\E\WTE\Updates

If this folder was not removed during the reinstall, it may contain a file called "WTLibrary.E.WTE.7.UPDATEPKG". If so, then in WT Library go to Help>Manually Apply Update Package, and select the Update 7 file. If the file is missing, you may be able to recover it from the PC of someone else running Update 7.

It seems that Update 1700 has streamlined this process, giving a new "Create Package" option under the Help menu, but unfortunately this doesn't give the option to create/share older updates that would be XP compatible.

It is the 1700 update that contains the updated non-xp compatible program.  You can bypass that.

It seems the best solution is put together a package that contains the old with the new.  It would have everything up to the 1701 update.  Will post back when ready.

Ok here is the link to download

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ar64WzzZD9T3yDlOF5g3_cRRQ8mD

Uninstalling your existing WT Library

Check the Program Files\Watchtower that is completely removed.  If not, deleted anything there.

Unzip the download, and run the setup

After it is installed, copy the file named "update." over to the Program Files\Watchtower folder.

You may want to backup the wtlibrary.exe file in case a future update changes it again, but most updates will just be the new publications and should update and work ok.

Sorry, that should be the Program Files\Watchtower\Watchtower Library\E  folder that you copy the file to. (the same place as the wtlibrary.exe file)

Hope this works for you.

I have heard of apps crashing, but never one that exploded. :lol1:

I think we should have a dedicated technical support section on the forum.  Then I can keep away from it :)  Perhaps mods can change this thread to WT Library in case others have the same problem.

I was going to ask the Mods to change the thread title, too. ^_^

Will PM one and put in the request. :D
