The great Pacific garbage patch is even trashier than we thought

In a new paper in Scientific Reports, researchers found that the infamous great Pacific garbage patch contains 16 times more plastic than previous estimates showed, and it seems to be increasing over time.

The great Pacific garbage patch is one of six areas of the ocean known to accumulate plastic, located in the north Pacific Ocean. While there is a lot of plastic there, the debris aren’t clumped together like some floating landfill. Instead, the plastics (many of them broken down into teeny tiny pieces) are distributed widely across an area of about 617,000 square miles.

I read also that all those loose fibres that come off our clothing in the washing machine are also adding to this problem.  Because there are many non-natural fibres being used now in our clothing, they don't break down in the same way as cotton/wool/linen do.  Add that to the pile of indestructible junk in the Pacific ocean. :(

It's interesting that they have the technology to gather fish by the thousands from below the surface of the water and vacuum them from one ship to another but they can't suck up the junk floating on the surface

And pens!

Dr Alan Jamieson, who led the study, said the findings were startling and proved that nowhere on the planet was free from plastics pollution.
“There is now no doubt that plastics pollution is so pervasive that nowhere – no matter how remote – is immune,” he said.
